Site downtime

I apologize for the web site being down. Many of you asked about it, so here is what happened: It was because my service provider decided the site was using too many server resources (it was a shared server, so other sites use it too). So rather then being reasonable people and contacting me about the issue to resolve it, they just shut it down. So speaking to them today, my choice now is to either let them charge me a ridiculous amount of money to put the site back up, or let the site stay down until I can rebuild it on another provider's server. Unfortunately, I don't have the time right now to rebuild it, so they now have a ridiculous amount of money from me.

That is lame, I thought I was kicked off. :lol22: I know how to set up a server but I don't know how to build a website on one. Security would be the next issue. Have you ever considerd any thing on those lines?

Actually, now that I'm sitting here looking at the numbers, the price isn't that bad. The cost is back to where it was with my previous service. I had switched to get more resources and save some money, so I guess things just ended up coming back around, but we still have more resources then before.

It's been suggested to me before, but it's not something I want to deal with. I'm not good with hardware, and I know nothing about the software that actually manages web servers. Then if it fails, the site is REALLY dead unless I have backup systems as well. Then I need a more serious internet connection at home.

Just thought I would throw it out there. Just glad I wasn't kicked off. I had to call Duane to find out if he could get on the site. When he said no I said well, I guess we are both banned then. LOL. It made me relize how important this place has become to me and my daily routine. I would be willing to donate to the cause.

I too would like to make a donation for operations of this well managed and operated site! I have nothing to sell so becoming an advertiser is not a good option. But I do all I can to send work to the guys that do advertise here.

Matt, I really appreciate your keeping this up and running and I know for a fact that some Polaris guys I know, do too.

Same here Matt!!! I felt like a crack head last night,I had the shakes,my head was hurting,the bed started spinning,i started sweating.So i called my doctor,He said i was ok.Just having JDSLED withdraws.LOL!!!!! Brock

What resources are we straining? We aren't even to the busy time of the year yet.

Is it just site traffic, or bandwidth we are using, or what?

Brian, that's what I said to him. We also went through last winter/busy season without a hiccup. It sounds like it has to do with there being other busy web sites that were on the same physical server as well and overloading it. Drive space and bandwidth are "unlimited" with the service, so they're talking about CPU & RAM usage on the server being the issue. After sending an e-mail last night requesting more information about what we're paying for now, I am told we are now on a "premium" server that is restricted to 50% fewer web sites so that more resources are available. It also uses SCSI drives instead of SATA for faster data access, and has more RAM installed.

Where they really got me is they discovered the New Breed store was on the same account. They made made put that on a second account, and pay for it as another site. I may have unknowingly cheated them on that before, I didn't know it was against policy. That's fine though, they should be treated as separate entities anyway.

As for the offers of donations, thank you! I'm trying to decide how to handle that. I may start a "Supporting Member" program or something of that nature.
