Ignition timing

Post by Cyclone440 »

I have a question on the ignition timing for a CCW 440/21 engine. My Deere service manual says the timing for the 21, with Denso ignition, should be .023 BTDC, but the 440/22 is listed at .009 BTDC. What is the big diffence between these two engines for the timing change? Is the .023 correct?

Thank you

these 2 motors have different pistons so I suspect the porting or port timing is the difference I would go by what is listed for your model

I would say it is due to porting because I'm pretty sure that 21's and 22's have the same bore and stroke, just a different wrist pin size. A 21 is also 3 ported while the 22 is 5 ported. Thanks for the .009 info as well; I don't have the manual so I've timed both of my 22's to .023.

Thanks for the information guys. Ryan, if you ever need service manual specs, just let me know and I can email you a scanned picture.
