Secondary Clutch Difference Between '73 and '74?(Belt ques.)

Post by cpolaris502 »

I have a 1974 400. Comet primary and I (think) a Salisbury secondary clutch. I am replacing my belt and received a Dayco 3011 from MFG Supply. I put it on and while the width seems right (the belt sits high in the secondary clutch), the length seems to be too long. When I squeeze the belt together while installed, it is about 2.5" from touching each other if I push it together between the clutches. The belt that I pulled off was a Dayco Max 1034, worn to only an inch wide, but the length seemed correct when it was installed. The old belt sat almost a 1/4" down into the secondary. I wonder if it was too short, or just too narrow.

My main question is: How much different were the secondary clutches between '73 and '74? I wonder if the '73 was smaller in diameter and is making the belt fit looser because of it. It is the clutch that came on the sled and the only way I figured it is a '73 is because it is marked as one from a swap meet, most likely.

1973 400 had JD belt # M64549......Dayco HP3001, 1-3/16 x 43-1/16.
1974 400 had JD belt # M64550.... Dayco HP3011, 1-1/4 x 44-5/8.
Hope this helps.

I did find that information a I was searching across a few sites the other night. Thanks though. The 3001 is a little over an inch shorter and it's hard to say if it will fit right, I don't know the measurement of the used belt that came off of it.

As of now, I'm thinking I am going to need the 3001 and not the 3011.

Clutches should de swapped as a pair. I'm not sure why anyone would switch from a Comet secondary to a Salisbury, but i'm not sure that you will ever find a belt that will fit.

My guess is that something was wrong with the original one and someone happened to find one that was close enough and worked. For all I know, it could actually be a comet... I didn't find very much identifying info in my searches as to which one I have. The service manual talks about different holes for the spring to go into when rebuilding it, but my clutch does not have holes for the spring. It has notches that the end of the spring kind of hooks onto.
