Yamaha Srv 540
Yamaha Srv 540
Hi I recently got a yamaha srv 540 snowmobile. The problem I have with it is that it runs in reverse any ideas on how to fix this?
My sleds, 1982 Liqufire, 1980 Trailfire, 1977 Sno*jet SST.

What?

Shot in the dark here, and just going off what I have been told.
If your timing is retarded enough some old 2 strokes can run in reverse. This is a place to start, does it have a "fresh rebuild"?.

Kind of reminds me of the old saying "mine is so fast I can beat you backwards".
I mean those SRV's were fast.
But in order to run in reverse like Scott said they have to be started in reverse.
So does your Yammy have elctric or recoil start?
And was reverse available on SRV's?

Taking a shot on this without the reply to my question.
The recoil rope broke and the guy wound it backwards.
So when you pull the rope it starts up but the runs the wrong direction.

Call me naive, gullible, both or something worse, but is that possible? Sure, I could see myself putting the recoil together backwards, but actually get it to run in reverse?

Re: Yamaha Srv 540
I figured the problem out guys it was a bad stator. The wires had melted together and must have been shorting out. I replaced the coils and all is good now.

That is how some sleds ran in reverse.
They start the engines backwards.
The secondary will not funtion in reverse so there is no speed available , just the ability to back up slowly.
Other brands actually reverse the chaindrive to obtain reverse and the secondary will funtion than so you can move along pretty well backwards.

Hi, I just ran across this post while searching for a way to selectably run a 540 in reverse (got it in a golf cart). I've got a starter generator on it so I can crank it in reverse, but it won't run. Is there ANY chance you remember anything about what wires were melted together? Any of them melted to ground?jasoniowa wrote:I figured the problem out guys it was a bad stator. The wires had melted together and must have been shorting out. Thanks, and I'll owe ya!
