1984 Liquifire Value
1984 Liquifire Value
There is a 1984 Liquifire for sale in Arizona. Vin # 285159, 1600 miles. The sled is complete but still will need the usual teardown and reseal, carbs, fuel pump clutches checked, Etc. Front pan is dented up (kind of expected), seat needs done. No idea on track condition, it is a mountain sled and track is probably fine as it is not in the low elevation heat. It has electric start and hand warmers. Hood was either repainted or it is off an 83 because the (liquifire) is under the stripe. I told him that I have seen these go for 750.00 to 900.00 on Ebay over the last year with similar asking prices online. I would like to purchase it and would like some Honest prices. I got my 84 Liquifire for $500.00 (2200 miles) and my 84 Trailfire for $200 (486 miles) in 2011. They did need the same work as this one, Plus I had to replace the windshields, paint hoods and buy sticker kits. What is a fair price???

Re: 1984 Liquifire Value
The seller, Jason, sent me pic's of the sled also. She is in nice shape, but will need all the work you mentioned, plus all new chassis bearings, clutch servicing, and such if you plan to ride it. I paid $1,200 for one plus another basket base a few years ago, but she was a runner, and had all the work done to it minus crank seals.
I think that is a $500 to $700 sled in this market, also considering it's in northern AZ. Good luck with the sled, but I would rather he either put a price on it, or put it on Evil Bay and let the market decide. I have never taken to the "make me an offer" type of negotiation, and Matt does not allow that on these classifieds. VS has different rules however.
I do think its a desirable sled, and I really like the fact it has factory electric start too.
Good luck,

Re: 1984 Liquifire Value
I have bought 84 liquifires from $50-$1300 and every where in between. I found a couple locally and traveled for some. There are not to many guys that are willing to travel that type of distance and pay a premium for a sled on top of it. Just think of the bs logistics that would come along with a sale like that. Anyhow, Location is everything here. Just sayin. TASKY

Wait what!! Joe just said $500-$700. Where'd $1200 come from.

Re: 1984 Liquifire Value
Bob,
I was only giving my opion on what I thought that 84 was worth, so no worries. My estimate was based on rebuilding the crank, resealing the motor, rebuilding the carbs with all new parts, replacing all the bearings in the chassis and suspension, ect. If you want a freash Jerome crank, new pistons on nicasil bores, you need to budget $800 just for the motor.
Plus it's in northern AZ, and that is 850 miles from me. Luckily I have one 84 LF rider and one basket case already. No doubt it is worth more other folks, and would probably bring well over a grand on Evil Bay.
I do kind of agree with Bill, although they only built 420 of them, they "seem" to have a good survior rate as I had a much harder time find my 84 Sprintfire. In my experiance, finding a nice 84 Sport that they built slightly less of, (370) is harder to do. Only ever saw one in NY for example, and she is pretty rough.

PS: JDfanAZ: Good luck with the seller, I hope you close the deal. That looks to be a nice sled.

"although they only built 420 of them, they "seem" to have a good survior rate"
as i was reading this I was thinking the same thing. I am not a serious collector but when I found my '83 and '84 the same day, I was surprised. I knew the low production numbers on the '84 and thought I had hit a home run but they seem to be around as I have seen several for sale after purchasing mine.
Maybe my perception is off a little because I compare the '84 L/F's to the 550 Interceptor - but I understand the differences despite the similiar production numbers.
Has anyone considered a "log" of the '84 L/F owners (and the other low production JD models)
Thoughts???

Matt has a "Registry" section on the website, perhaps that could be used.Flatlander wrote:"although they only built 420 of them, they "seem" to have a good survior rate"

Re: 1984 Liquifire Value
I went up to the mountains and picked up the Liquifire. Thanks to the one on Ebay that sold for 2750. I ended up at 2k for mine. If it was any other sled besides #159 or 161 I would not have bought it. It is in very nice original condition, Paint, stickers, and track are AWSOME. The clutch is not original and the seat is bad... I have a spare TR800 and have all the material to reupholster my seats. The only thing I have to buy are the crank seals. I made day of the trip and got some food with my son who lives in the area during his lunchtime at school. He thinks I am Crazy for restoring these old sleds. Though no complaints are heard when they get to ride them... Thanks for the help guys. Was the site down for a few days? Some of the posts I did and the update on profile disappeared.
