440 trailfire quiestions

Post by JCG »

My buddy just picked up an '81 trailfire which we tore apart last night. Few questions before I put in an order to Dennis Kirk.

The carb is full of mouse piss and I'm assuming it will be difficult to remove the various jets and still be able to read the #s. Its a 34 mikuni. Anyone know which needle, main, pilot and air jets to get? or would it be better to just buy a new carb?

Dennis Kirk doesn't sell a clutch puller for this exact model, does the kawasaki engine and clutch combination cross reference with other models/brands?

Would you reccommend abandoning the oil injection and going 50 to 1 mix or are the oil pumps generally reliable after 24 years.
Thanks

I would just buy carb parts cleaner in a 1 gallon can made by gunk . Just take the carb apart and soak it for a day or so then rinse it with carb cleaning spray. For the clutch puller I bought one from Dennis Kirk #28-464 cost $34.99 and it does work on the comet 102c clutches.I wouldnt disconnect the injectoin because the bearings are oiled direct from it.The only thing that would go wrong with them is the check valves and they go bad very rarely.

If you are still interested, the specs for a 440 Trailfire carb are as follows:

Main Jet: 230

Jet Needle: 6F27-3

Needle Jet: 166 Q0

Throttle Valve: 3.5

Pilot Jet: 25

Air Screw: One turn out

These are the standard settings from the factory for 0F to +40F and for sea level to 4000 ft.

actually if carb is full of mouse piss so will the crankcase and YOU NEDD to clean that all out.. unfortuanatly there isnt a solvent that will get rid of it

how do i know this i had a mouse nest in my own trailfire air box two years ago it stunk like you wouldnt believe and actually ate a bit of the aluminum away in case and carb. i ended up trying everything from thinners , solvents acids and carbs cleaner nothing and i mean nothing worked i ended up glass beading everything clean and rebuilding the rest..
