Panther Motor
i am looking at a panther with model number p22j but motor in sled is a kohler k399- 2t serial number on sled is 906949 what motor is original please help if you can

What you are looking for is a 1969 Panther with a JLO 380 single engine.
Just under 4000 built this way so they should be out there.

My p22j has a 372 jlo in it and is the original motor numbers on the motor are L380

Yes, that is the one. They called it a 380 but it really was a 372.
Just like a JD 300 really is a 295.

Close, the displacement of a 380 is 372cc but they are not entirely the same motor. The heads and i believe maybe the cranks were different between the L372 and the L380. The 380 was 24hp and the 373 was 21hp.JDT wrote:Yes, that is the one. They called it a 380 but it really was a 372.

The old Cat model numbers like P22J ment Panther 22hp JLO.
There was a 69 JLO MOD. That motor may have been a 380 or a 372, I do not know.
Model number on that sled is P22J MOD. Book shows a rating of 22 HP but I doubt that is correct as it was a MOD motor.
MOD Motors were built by Shorty Long and the production total in my CAT referance book show only 113 of that model, which makes them darn rare.

Was just poking around the net and read that the 69 JLO MOD was actually a 396 cc rated at 28 HP.
Maybe a different engine again. Not sure.
The only CAT I have with a MOD single engine is a Hirth 340.

The 69 MOD was a L395 that had been worked over at the factory. I did a little more looking around this afternoon and the 380 had full circle cranks and the 372 had a pork chop style crank. I believe the 395 shares a crank with the 380.

The P22J that i'm working on seems to be a bit of an oddity. I obtained it from the original owner with 500 orig miles and he swears this is the way it came. It has a single Montana pipe on it with all of the correct mounting hardware. I have never been able to confirm that ones like this were produced , but its rumored that the pipe could be installed as a dealer option. I plan on a full restoration including the Montana pipe ....

I have a Panther Kyle. I have always lusted for Puma MOD.
Yes there were only a handful of Cats that left TRF with the famous pipes. And those were Panthers only in 1970.
All others were dealer installed in 69-71.
Today here is a company in IN that has reproduced the ACP pipes exactly with the flex kits, clamps and brackets.
They are perfect repops and have superior chrome. You reading this DA?
But will set a guy back $700.00 last I checked and that was a few years ago.
I bet they are even higher now.
