Spitfire crank seals...

Post by deerehunter »

Can the crank seals,on the 78 Kohler 340FA,be changed without splitting the case? Or should I split the case & inspect everything, crank bearings, jugs, pistons etc? I have never taken one apart before. I won't be running it anymore til next season. Thanks.

I had a leaky spitfire seal last winter which allowed moisture into the outer bearing. The extra hour of work allowed me to find and replace that failed bearing. I'd take the time to do it right especially if your winter is over. The spittys are very simple motors to learn on. Ask questions, there are plenty of guys willing to help you through it.

Thanks Todd. I have one in my sled that has bad PTO seal, but runs. Also have another that has low comp on mag side. I'm tearing the one apart that has low comp. I might need some help, don't know at this point in time. I'll give ya a holler if I do. I'll probably have the sled/engine at Milbank.Thanks.

Well, this engine has bad jugs, pistons & stator.. Has a great bottom end.I guess I'll use it for parts now. Now I guess I'll have topull the other engine & tear it down. Oh well.

ok,I got the Kohler 340FA tore down to the bare case. It needs crank seals, both looked good, but upon further inspection, they were both really HARD[junk]. For now,I need 1-Mag side crank seal. I have the PTO side seals. Anybody? Thanks.

Common to get the seals in the whole gasket set, shouldn't be hard to find. FYI you can change seals without splitting the case.

Matt has the seals at New Breed Parts, and they are cheap. Look at the numbers on yours and order the same size.

That engine uses two different seals. I am not sure which side is which, but you can check against your measurements.

WOW, that is a low price.

I would replace them both.

Darn!!!! I ordered original Kohler seals before I came over here, they were like $4.00 or so apiece. The seals I took out, were ribbed, how do you get them in without splitting case?? I'm guessing, take the rib off. I've got one case split & cleaned, awaiting the seals. Thanks guys for your help. :) :sled: By the way,the first seal listed above,25x52x7,is the MAG side.
