I LOVE GOLD!! Polaris 400

Post by 427cobra »

This sled made it home with me tonight. The price was right so why not...??

I started cleaning and taking it apart tonight. 120 psi both sides and it ran with gas down the cylinders. I bet it has 200 picks in the track!

It has the 400cc Liquid cooled motor.

Anyone know anything about these sleds? Good or Bad? I plan on going through it and probably just sell it when I am done. Should I replace the crank seals if it runs ok? Or is it new enough to just tune it up and go...?

Well it DOES need crank seals...along with a Mag side crank bearing. There wasnt anything left of the mag seal! So hopefully get that straightened out and it will be ready for CL!

Went through the suspension and chain case over the weekend. Its coming back together.

It should be a decent sled when its done....especially to bang around the ditches in IL!!

Eric, what year is that 400? Also what is the OD of the carbs? I have one off of a 87 Indy Trail 488 fan cooled. I'm 95% sure it will work but I want to make sure.

Duane...Its an 86' according to the registration.

I forgot to measure the OD of the carbs...

But I looked up the p/n's and both sleds use the same carb adapters on the air box. (p/n 5410403) I did notice that the air box p/n's are different between the two machines...

The 400 airbox is 1253098 while the airbox for the trail is 1253099. Does the air box you have an air inlet tube?

Maybe they are same idk...??

Here is one on ebay...but its way more than what I want to spend:

I believe that airbox was used on the 340 TXL Indys and early 400's. The one on the Trail Indy doesn't have the hose on the side. The ones with the hose are getting a little harder to find. The one on e-bay is kind of high on their price. I have the exact one on a 86 Indy 400 but it is cracked. I think you should have one with the hose if you are sticking with stock jetting. How about I take the hose off of the 86 Indy 400 airbox that is shot and send it with the Trail Indy airbox that looks exactly the same and I'll measure and mark the hose location and you can cut it out. How is $20 plus actual shipping sound?

These are very fast sleds. My son had an '87 model 400. 90 miles per hour on a lake. 440's and most 500's could not keep up. Would walk away from a start. Held together very well also
