nothing like a free running sled

Post by flames4555 »

A co-worker recently noticed the sled pictures in my office and said " i've got an old sled out behind the garage, just come over and pick it up . So I went to is house only to be greeted by him riding it around the yard . I was dissapointed I didn't find a Deere , but a running free sled ...yahoo... It turns out ot be a 1980 motoski futura 500 with a fan cooled 503 in it . Were these pretty good sleds ?

thanks
Kevin

Finally spent some time with this sled and found out it has no choke , but a primer instead . I replaced the screen /check ball filter in the tank and all of the fuel lines as well as rebuilding the fuel pump . This thing now starts every time one pull !!!! Has anyone adapted a primer to their deere sleds or did any of them come stock with one ? Man it would be great if all my sleds started this easily...

The Rotax 503 is a common engine used in Ultralight Aircraft. Many builders prefer the primer to a choke. Starting can be easier, and there is no choke to potentially malfunction. The only complaint I've heard is that the plunger type primers don't tend to last all that long.

my Mikuni Carbs on my liquifire have a spot for a primer the hole on the top part right before the intake part. I could if i wanted to. you could to you just might need to drill a hole and make your own. Hey wait wernt you the guy that told people how to do it on your website.

The actual web site is the Dead sled wrenchers there are a few of us that contribute there . Curt is the author of the primer article and several more on the site. I am still amazed at how quickly it starts 2 pumps on the primer and one pull and she fires right up .

Hi, Sorry I'm little late. The Rotax 503 is a very dependable motor,we've had a few around here. Due to the age of the sled ,you might want to have a look a the crank bearings.Primers are GREAT ,you can use them on Tillys and Wallys, you may need the little plate if carb doesn't have barb.

Howdy, just a quick note that the mikunis found on the 'fire series deere sleds all have a screw next to the carb flange. On the kawasaki counterparts this threaded hole was utilized for a primer and came stock on all later Kawasaki's, including the Invader, Intruder, Interceptor, Intriguer and Drifter. DK offers a kit for these that utilize the same holes, or you could just find a primer setup from a Kawasaki and it would "bolt-in" other than mounting your primer button. GL with your Motoski!
