Getting another New/Used sled!

Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone has any info on my newest sled. I am picking up a 1999 Yamaha SRX 700 (Yep...awfully new for me) in almost perfect shape.
I have looked on line and about the only thing I find is that even by today's standards they are FAST!!!
Does anyone know anything I should be watching for, what the weight is, horsepower, etc?

I have an 01 SRX and all I can say is make sure you hold on. It is very fast! Also, Make sure your carbs are clean.

I had heard the SRX700's were extremely fast...it is funny you mention the carbs though.
I was told by the previous owner that it is very hard to start for the first time of the season. I pulled and pulled on Saturday (100+ pulls, full choke, half choke, etc...pretty sore yet today) and no go. My only success is it would pop very first pull if I put raw pre-mix fuel in the cylinder but would just as quickly shut down! I had been checking around and hearing about cleaning the fuel pump and the carburetors. I carefully took apart and cleaned out the fuel pump (I guess there is not a gasket kit available, you are supposed to just buy a new fuel pump!) and still no go...carbs are next.
Are there carb rebuild kits available at any place other than the dealership? Does not seem to be a lot of aftermarket support other than the usual window dressing (windshields, slides, carbides etc.). I also heard something about bypassing the TORS valve, any idea what this "valve" is/does?
The previous owner also mentioned that just last year he started having problems with it loading up when he took it off trail...I assumed this was due to his exhaust getting plugged by the snow but do you think this could be an indicator of other things?
This is a whole new animal to me so I ordered the Clymer manual to help me so I don't screw anything up...it should be hear later this week so I am letting her sit until then.

You have heated carbs. They ice up pretty easy. Mine would eat spark plugs. It would foul plugs daily. You'll learn how and when to heat the carbs to fit your riding style. But they are a fun sled to go beating around on. You'll enjoy it.

I work with a guy who has 16,000 miles on his and never had the motor apart on it.

This one has 7,800 miles on it and the only thing the guy said is it is hard to start for the first time of the season. He is moving out of Minnesota and gave me the "I work with you and I want to get rid of it deal" of $750.00, so I couldn't hardly say no. From what I am hearing cleaning the flat-slide carbs might cure the issue...we'll clean them up and hopefully we will be good to go.

Got the carburetors off and I might see one of the reasons it was so hard to start. The center carb has a roller bearing with a seal on both sides The seal on one of the sides went an awful long time with the seal folded over and allowing air to come in...can't be good! It was not ripped so I carefully straightened it out and put the shaft through correctly.
I do have a question though.
When I disassembled the carbs, on the inside where the throttle shaft goes through, there was grease inside for what I assume was to lubricate the throttle shaft bearing...problem is I don't think it is supposed to be there, it was just a bunch of gray muck.
The gasoline vapors going through the carb had broken it down to the consistency of mucus!
I cleaned it out and I started wondering why it was there. If the cap is sealed and the vapors going through are mixed with 2 stroke oil...why does the carburetor need extra grease in it? I would think that if the oil is good enough for my engine it should be good enough for a roller bearing on a carburetor shaft.
Any body have any first hand knowledge on if the flat slide carbs need to have grease in them?

WOW!!!
I got the carbs rebuilt and with a few pulls to prime the carbs she started and purrs like a kitten...OK, maybe a psychotic, saber-toothed, trapped in a cage kitten, but a kitten nonetheless.
One thing for certain, we're not in Kansas anymore!
This thing has so much torque that when the throttle is blipped you can see the sled twist up ! Lifting the skis off the ground will be a regular event! It idles with a slight rumble, but when you goose it, it sounds like a racing motorcycle with barely muffled stinger pipes. This is a far cry from anything else I have ever owned!
To quote Peter Parkers dad "with great power comes great responsibility". All I can say is I am glad I did not have this thing when I was younger!

I have a 98 which I bought 2 months ago. blew the motor bottem end 24 hours after I bought it so bought a used motor and runs great. Motor blew due to #3 carb fuel line pinched in half and oil is mixed in fuel pump. Get 1" studs (alot) Runs perfect now and very fast.

Throttle Over Ride System

Exhaust valves need to be clean on these as with any VES engine, only problem is to adjust the yammy you need a special tool to electronically bypass the actuator to adjust correctly and the tool is discontinued ( go figure) a lot of guys bypass them, i'm not sure you get everything from the engine in doing so.

Yes, throttle over ride system.
Make sure it work good. If mine didn't, I would need a new garage door. I also use BR9ES plugs. Works great. Wildcat will run tomorrow!

I have to say, I now have two favorite sleds. My Yamaha is fast, smooth, reliable...and did I say fast? The other is my boys 440 Cyclone. Ugly, old, looks broken...fast, smooth (kinda) and reliable (everything mechanical is rebuilt or new). Not sure if over twenty years gained as much as it should have...love them both though!
