That's a nice looking project Clay. What's wrong with the wheels, is it just the bearings that are bad? If it's just the bearings you can probably pick them up pretty cheap at your local auto parts store. I just purchased a set for my 80 this week, I think they were around $3-4 bucks each.

Your crankshaft bearing can also be purchased from autozone or napa. Just bring them the number to match up. Shoud be a common size.

Ebay for idler bearings works too.

Matt should have the gaskets, seals, and piston you need. Check out his store which is linked to this site...NEW BREED PARTS

On the idlers one of them that are bad I can replace the bearing easily because it is one of the plastic idler wheels. The other two are the ones that go on the rear swing arm that have the steel centers.

On the engine I have the gasket set for the sled sitting in the desk. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to get the oil pump gear off of the crankshaft so I can get the old seals off it and I need to get a bearing splitter so I can get the bearing off of the other end.

One question on the pistons. What's the pros and cons on SPI vs Wisco?

I've drilled out the rivet (for lack of a better description) on those rear swing arm wheels and replaced the bearings. I bolted the wheels back together with M4 socket head cap screws and nuts. (Edit: forgot to mention I also used Loctite on the screws.)

I've only used the SPI pistons and don't have any complaints.

spi pistons, widerosa complete gasket set with crank seals and the idler wheels from any local dealership that sells aftermarket parts from marshalls distributors, the crank I would have a crank builder replace the bearing and look it over.

Are the inner bearings good on the crank? Are the bottom connecting rod bearings good?

The oil pump gear can be removed with a bearing spliter.

Do you have a tech manual? you can get one at vintagesnow.com

The inner bearings and the connecting rod bearings are good. The mag side bearing is frozen and the pto bearing looks good. I have the tech manual from vintage snow. I ordered a SPI piston from Newbreeds and should have that sometime this week. I already have the gasket set and seals.

I would change the frozen bearing and put the engine back together.

You are going to have a great sled when your done.

Its been a while since I've put any updates on for this but I haven't done much with it. Right now I am working on getting the aluminum cross shafts out of the suspension. I got the ones out of the front swing arm but I am having trouble getting the rear one out :bonk: :bonk: . Any ideas on getting it out would be appreciated.

The next thing is i have been trying to figure out what I am going to do with my crankshaft and I have decided that instead of having myself try to find the right puller to get the bearings off the ends I am going to send it to Jerome at crankshaft services and have him go through the whole thing. This way I don't have any issues with my crankshaft.

Clay, there's whole section somewhere here about removing cross shafts. There are as many ways as there are cross shafts. Don't worry about ruining the cross shaft as new ones are easily made, and again, there's a whole section devoted to that too.

So it's been quite awhile since I did anything with this project. I put it on the back burner till I got through school. I'm now starting back in to it with hopes to have it ready for this winter. Stay tuned for more info as I gather parts and start putting this together!

2019 must be the year to finally get some old projects finished.

After many years of off and on working on this sled it finally rolled out of the barn under it's own power! And thanks to lastnights snow storm I was able to get a little riding in on it :sled: :sled:

Got a few gremlins to work out with the power jet carbs yet but man I wish I had done this sooner! Here's to a good snowmobile season :beers; :beers;
