I haven't commented on this previously because I wanted to wait to see what was said.
Now this is only my opinion, & everybody know what opinions are like.
I would have to say that a well tuned Dator engine would have been the most powerful, I don't know that anybody has let out any Dyno HP ratings on the Dator engines.. The race rules for 76 was 340 CC & 60 HP but without any Race Tech checks on HP some could have had 60+. The 80-84 Liquifires were rated at 65 HP I believe so some Dators could have been up around or exceeding that..
Now for the fasted sled I would have to say that the 340/S & the Dator would almost be in a tie for that position, Remember Roger Janssen on a 340/S was radared close to 100 mph in the 75 race by I think a MHP trooper, & in the 76 race I believe someone maybe Brian was also radared around that same speed.
I know that I had our Dator up to 98+ on bare tar at around 15-20 deg outside temp..
Just my $.0875 worth

Bare tar?? Grumpy tell me it isn't so.

Hey guys I was only joking about the 75 800.
Several listed on Ebay over the years claimed it was Deere's fastest sled as it has an 800 cc engine.

This 83 Sprint ran 70mph for over two straight hours. We couldn't shake it from our tail.

I believe that Bare Tar at 15-20 deg, outside temp when it has that wet look is faster than Ice, there is no track slippage & when your running full length CC Carbides on the skis there isn't much friction on the skis as when your running steering carbides on Ice.
Whenever we wanted to test top speed that is when & where we went..

I think you guys get caught up in the mystique of the Liquidator and 340S. 100 MPH takes a lot more than 60hp to achieve. Especially on cross country sleds that typically run shorter gears. Line a 83 Liquid up against a Dator ( both in a good state of tune) and the 83 will tow it down the track. Bombs away!!!!

I would have to say 82-84 Liquifire due to some very informal racing experiences. 3 friends of mine lined up on a lake 1 Liquidator, 1- 76 440 Trailtwister 1- 84 Liquifire. It was pretty even off the line. At about 500 ft it was between the Trailtwister and the Liquifire. The Liquifire started to pull away from the Trailtwister at around 1200 feet (maybe tr800 overdrive magic had something to do with this). I am pretty sure we were around 75mph give or take. The Liquidator really was not that far behind but was clearly out of the race.

Another astonishing lake race was between a 77 440 Liquifire (that now belongs to 80spitfire) and a Polaris 340TXL. That TXL put up a good fight but was being left slowly on the top end.

These sleds were what I would call stock trailrider type sleds. We repeated these linups several times just because thats what friends do. Take it for what it is.

I was watching my 1975 I-500 video and Jim Orr the narrator reported on the last day that a MN state trooper timed Roger Jansen at 84 MPH. At the end of the video Roger talks about breaking some teeth off the upper high speed sprocket from jamming on the brakes. Jim also makes mention of Shane Crisp from Canada gunning his 340/S at speeds of over 70 MPH. I hope this clears some of the confusion.

Everyone talks about how heavy a race prepped Dator is. A 340/S sure ain't light. So to be fair you have to consider the weight to HP ratio of each model. For example a late model lessor HP Liquifier might be quicker than a Dator because it's lighter. A Dator might make more HP but because of it's weight isn't as quick.

I agree. The older sleds are much heavier and horsepower versus weight is huge. No one can agree on the power produced by Dators and 340/S race machines because everyone who ran them pushed the envelope and everyone else told fish stories. To Troy's point, notice how the Liquifire changed between 76 and 78. Deere worked hard to get the weight out of it's machines and that paid dividends in efficiency given the Sno Goer fuel economy trials recently posted on this site. A friend of mine who raced all the Deere sleds referred to the Liquidator as the sled that would go like hell but just not very far.

Maybe the question should be Which sled overall was the fastest? or What stock John Deere snowmobile motor made the most horsepower per cubic centimeter? Liquidcooled vs Fan? Just brainstorming.

Chuck (I500) you have ridden all three (Dator, 80's Liquifire, 340/s ) farely recently I would imagine you applied a little anger to each one, What are your impressions?
