Comet 100c Clutch Parts? Looking for bushings

Post by cpolaris502 »

The primary clutch on my JD400 is WORN OUT! Both the cover and the movable sheeve have tons of slop and it's binding terribly. It revs out like crazy and only does maybe 30mph. The belt only ride up halfway on the primary. I took it apart and found that both the cover bushing and movable sheeve bushing are shot.

Does anyone know where I can get some new ones or if parts from a different clutch will fit? Thanks. Hoping to get this thing running good enough for the WOBLE to Waconia this weekend.

The 100Cs are pretty much a throw away clutch. You no doubt need a new fixed, and a new moveable...in other words a new clutch. Does it look like this: http://www.jdsleds.com/community/viewto ... 11&t=15269

Replace it with a good 102C

Haha, yes. It looked and sound exactly like the one in that link.

I ended up getting another movable sheeve assembly from a friend that was a spare. It's nowhere near new but works 100x better than what I had.

Thanks for the offer on the NOS parts, I'll try to get some apart numbers gathered up and see what you have. I may even see if I can find a decent 102c this weekend at the swap.

Are the bushings on the 100c moveable sheave pressed in? I was thinking of machining the old one out of mine, making a new bushing, and then shrink fitting the new one in. Any thoughts? Or are the sheaves cast around the bushing?

Ok, nevermind. I figured I had nothing to lose so I machined the old bushing out, made a new one out of oilite bronze, shrunk it in, and finish bored it to fit the stationary sheave. Just like new!

Here's a shot of the clutch after the moveable bushing was repaired.

Very nice, looks like you salvaged the clutch.

The 101C is completely rebuildable except you needed a new moveable, which is what you have rebuilt here.
The 101C has a bushing on the fixed. To the best of my knowledge the fixed is the same as the 100C.
On a couple of the 100Cs I have taken apart, the fixed is very worn, rendering them junk, but I suppose if there is a will there is a way.

I agree. According to the service manual the 101C had a hardened steel bushing in the moveable which rode over the bronze sleeve on the shaft of the fixed. I really don't understand why they would offer both designs. I actually considered converting mine to the 101C but I was too lazy to make 2 bushings. Maybe next time.

The 100C was used in '73-'74 ( update to the '73 X8), the 101C was only used in '75 ( I think ), because the 102C came out in '75 with the 340/S, and was used across the line in '76.
