300/440 up and running again video

Post by Steven »

Here's video of my 74' 300. Installed some new to me bogies and springs (thanks IWB140) this week. The stock exhuast wouldn't fit but i kinda like the loud pipe. The salsbury secondary is working after a good cleaning and i had to use three 3/4 i/d spacer washers. It was wasnt aligned properly with the primary 102c. Next year a comet 90d 3/4 inch bore is going on. I'm really starting to like this sled. On a side note if you're ordering parts from fellow members from the States in Canada the border customs "fees" are ridiculous. They nailed me $109 for three bogey sets a muffler and springs.

Good to see another 300 running around this neck of the woods. I'm in Chatham. Wondering if you have been able to get it up to speed and see what it tops out at? I've only been able to get mine up to around 60km/h on a decent hard pack trail and I've been trying to get a feel for whether that is right or not? Clutches seem to be working fine and plugs looks a good color. Sounds ok, just doesn't have the top end - wondering if there's something I should be looking at or if she's actually running in top order?

No, I'm not to sure what "buck" does on the top end for speed. At that point I'm literally hanging on for deere life! and bracing for impact LOL!
I cleaned up my secondary and fixed up the bogie wheels and that definately helped in the speed department. Maybe take a look at your cam shoes on the secondary they might need replacing. They are available from a member here. Everyone here on this site is great for information so I just read through old posts. If that fails, post pics!

I have gotten 58.9 MPH on my handheld GPS out of my '76 300, that was wound out for about 1/4 mile or better on a very hardpacked lake. The Kohler is I think 28 HP? I also have a '73 Ski Doo Oly 340, it tops out at 51.5 GPS, 23 HP. But the Ski Doo would beat the Deere in a 300' drag race, the torque and gearing on that sled is different.

Thanks - 60MPH is a far cry from the 60 KMH I was getting! Looks like I have more investigation ahead of me... Might check the gears - it's pretty snappy off the line which is why I found it surprising that I could only get to 60 KMH. Anyone know off hand what the stock gear ratio is?

From the service manual in specs for the drivetrain.

NOTE: 300 Snowmobiles beginning with Serial No. 22,626 have the AM52270 High-Torque kit in- stalled as standard equipment at the factory.

I put on a 90D driven. Putting on a new fan belt today while it's warm, before the storm Niagara is supposed to get.
