1981 Sportfire
I did a search and found many ways to install the new fuel tank grommet, but I can't find how to remove the old one without destroying the metal fitting. That thing is in there tight, It will spin, but I can't get it out. What say you?

Re: Fule tank grommet removal
It should pull straight out. You should have to remove it prior to replacing the grommet.

Re: Fule tank grommet removal
GRRRRRR!! I went back out and put a rag around the nipple and then put the vise grips on and then pulled. It came out. The larger part of the grommet anyway. The inner-smaller part of the grommet that seals around the tank tore off. So I then fished the line out of the tank and the fuel pickup fell off the other end of the hose into the tank. Guess I need to find me a bolt retriever and go fishing!!

Re: Fule tank grommet removal
After some fishing, I retrieved both pieces from the tank. The hose in the tank was so brittle.
Shouldn't there be some clamps on the fuel pickup to the hose and also the hose onto the metal nipple that goes through the grommet?

Re: Fule tank grommet removal
When ever I work on the rubber grommets and fuel lines anything that is hard over time I use a heat gun on it to warm it up a little to make it more plyable. This way you don't end up braking something causing more problems. Glad to see you got the job done. jimmy
