97 arctic cat zr580 efi

Post by liquitisplit80 »

Hi all, looking at buying a 97 arctic cat zr580 with efi. Dont know anything about these sleds and need some advise on what problems to look for.
The engine was rebuilt before current owner. Sled has 4600 mi. Current owner says he only rode it once (do to lack of time).
Any help would be appreciated.

Not a bad sled but the stators are complete garbage. I'd make sure I got it cheap enough to spend the money getting the stator rewound. Otherwise I'd be carrying a rope because you are going to get towed home at some point.

Is $850 reasonable?

I friend has one of these EFI Cats.

Same thing as mentioned.... Stator issues are common. And very expensive to replace.

Also with the milage as listed probably needs the complete front end bushing replacement performed.

And maybe more.

If you knew history of maintenance and stator then $850 would be fair.
If unknown check over very carefully or look for a better price.

If I got the stator replaced/rewound how long do they usually last? And how much is 'very expensive'??

Also looking at a '96 cat 440z. Do they have the same issues? Which one is the better sled?

In my opinion.... the best sled Cat made in that era was the ZL500.

New stator will set you back $700.00.
Rewound may last longer than OEM. And may cost less.

Any EFI machine will run big bucks if it needs repair.
More complex systems and limited aftermaket parts are the reason.

The 580 engine is notorious for comsuming mass quanities of gas.

The 550 engine on the other hand is a sipper.

The 440 Z is a simple powerplant. Easy to work on and cheap parts.

 $700! yea, I would say thats very expensive. Anyway, thanks for the input.
I think I'll stick with the 440Z. I like the looks of it better and it's cheaper! :D
