Dator Stator OHMs

Post by jdsledsrgr8 »

My first curse of the dator,

Think I possibly have a stator issue. Seems strange because Hewtec rewound it for me during the resto but sure seems like it is a stator. I keep fouling the left cyclinder plug. Has a new Hewtec CDI.

What Ohms should the stator produce?

Thanks

2.7k to ground on the yellow wire , could be a bad coil if its just one side , sometimes a stator issue will not discriminate sides wade

Thanks Wade. Replaced both coils already. Tore apart carb. All good. Still fouling that plug once hot. Could be that lower seal even though brand new did not seal or seat. Traded emails with Scott Hewtec, find it hard to believe a rewound stator and a brand new cdi box from him would crap after so few miles. He has too good of stuff.

This should help in testing the stator. Dators test the same as liquifires.

If your jet needles are both in the same groove then swap the carbs around and see if the plug fouling follows the carb..The PTO carb on my dater is different than the flywheel side..had the same problems as you are..It wasent until I installed the EGT guages that I found the problem..Both burn nice and brown now ..just a thought...Mark.

I realize your dator has a little different set up than my 440 cyclone but the fuel pump is similar. I was flooding out the left cyclinder and found a failing diaphram in the fuel pump.
Pulse line was pulling gas straight thru the pump to crankcase. Just a thought.

I like both the ideas Don and Mark suggest.

I recall other having issues before switching to surface gap plugs also.

Did you do a compression check while the engine was hot right after it fouled out?

Maybe the spark plug wire is failing when it gets hot do to heat tranfer from the hot engine.

And yes a new seal can be fail.

Back in the Race Days we found out that we couldn't always use Surface Gap Plugs, if your just riding around on low RPM's sometimes they wouldn't fire, they NEED lots of RPM's to work properly.. We also found out that some Stators/CDI Boxes or Coils just won't fire them, we had one CC Liquifire that would fire them & one that wouldn't..

Just Food For Thought

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Stator Ohms checked out. I did not swap the carbs to see if the problem follows. Just on a chance that the Hewtec went south I replaced it. But that was about the time all the snow left. It runs fine on the stand (maybe not as perky but hard to say) and I have pretty much reserved the investigation until I get snow and a load on it to test this December.

I will be at the HOF show, looking forward to seeing many for the 78 LF drawing and welcome anyone to access.
