Raw Fuel Coming From The Exhaust

Post by Mailman »

As I've working on my 81 sportfire I have been slowly getting the bugs out. The latest problem is after I took the carb. apart and cleaned it and put back together and when started it, it ran for a short time and then seemed to bogg down and die like it was flooded. When I tried to restart it I started to get raw gas out of the Y pipe(muffler is off). If the fuel pump is bad can that cause a over amount of fuel to go through the carb. and into the engine? I took the carb apart again and made sure there was no dirt but I did not take the seat out and check for dirt. Any thoughts.

I like to have ( on a single carb'd Sled ) a minimum of 2 fuel filters on the sled, one between the tank & the fuel pump & one between the fuel pump & the carb. This should remove any impurities in the fuel or tank.. I would suggest going through the carb again, make sure that there isn't any dirt or sand stuck in the needle & seat ( I have to assume that you have replaced them with New when you rebuilt the carb ) Make sure to clean out ALL orifice holes, & replace the pilot jet with NEW.. Also on assembly make sure that the floats are in correctly & adjusted properly, after re-installation on the sled make sure that the Choke is adjusted properly with play in the remote cable when in the off position ( check with the dash down as it will affect the adjustment if the dash is in the raised position..)
It's not uncommon to have to go through a carb or carbs two or three times to get them free of any debris.

Good luck

And make sure all raw fuel is removed from the crankcase. Pull your plugs and turn the engine over until all fuel is expelled.

If your fuel pump has a bad diaphram or checkvalve it can pump fuel directly into your crankcase.

"If your fuel pump has a bad diaphragm or check valve it can pump fuel directly into your crankcase. JDT" The sled has been setting for close to three years so it's very possible the diaphragm and other parts could of gotten bad. I had cleaned the gas out of the crankcase before but will do so again as well as double filtering the fuel line and replacing some of the jets and seats. One other question is there a size or number for the floats used in the carb? I have some from a cyclone that are good and look like they are close if not the same size and will fit.

Are your Floats damaged? other wise they can't fill up with gas so they should be alright, if there real dirty just spray carb cleaner on them & wipe them down they should be OK. IF you can't find genuine Mikuni needle & seats let me know as I have the good ones, I also have new Mikuni pilot jets also all I need is to know what size you need. Not sure but Matt may have these parts in the store??

I have all the different jets and needle and seat and also a pair of new floats as the pins on the old ones were about half worn down but I am still looking for a Jet Needle 6F27 as I figured I would replace everything I could in the carb.

Well I replaced all the jets , slide, floats & float arm, adjusted the choke, new fuel lines and two filters, and rebuilt the fuel pump. Hit the starter and about 5 sec. it fired off and ran just as smooth as could be. I have to put on the muffler and air shroud, hood and finish up some of the nuts & bolts and she should be ready for the snow. I want to thank all the members on here for your thoughts and ideas in getting it back to running again. Thanks Sandy O.
