Re: 1980? spitfire motor help
if rust is not that thick oil and grey scotch bright pad or in parts washer with grey scotch bright prolly would do it. Why did someone tell you they were junk cause they were Surface rusted? You might have a hard time finding cyl for the kawi smifire might have some I bought some from him last year.

Re: 1980? spitfire motor help
Are you sure those don,t have cast iron liners installed in those? Chrome lining doesn,t rust up like that. You will want to know this if you re-ring that cylinder...Rob.

Re: 1980? spitfire motor help
don't look like sleeved to me unless someone did a really nice job matching the ports.

Re: 1980? spitfire motor help
Judging from the pictures posted in another topic you have lost a lot of metal from the piston.
Some of this slag may have been blown out the exhaust and coated the manifold but some may have found its way into your crankcase.
More than likely the cause of this meltdown was or is a bad seal.
If this was my engine it would get completely torn down and toughly cleaned and inspected.
Just repairing the top section may be as short lived fix.
Your jugs look usable. Just clean them up as suggested. The head replaced, new seals and gaskets, new pistons.

Re: 1980? spitfire motor help
Asking as someone who has never done this work before, wouldn't that hone damage the edges of the ports, or round them over? If yes, does it even matter? I've only SEEN (never used) the types of hones with the flat strips.

From what I can see in your photos there is some rust and some debris in the sleeves.
That is minor but you should clean them up.
A little work with some sandpaper should be enough.
Clean throughly when dome and spray them with WD-40 or wipe them with oil as they will rust back fast.
These are sleeved cylinders not plated.
Honing can be done but lightly.
I don't have a ball hone, I use a flat three bladed one... only when really needed.

Re: 1980? spitfire motor help
so the cylinders for the spitfire are sleeved? its the Kawasaki fire-burst motor, and if i hone it out n get new cylinders that will be good to run it? I'm tearing the bottom end apart as well to replace a bearing.

You can see in your pictures that there is a sleeve.
I do not see the need to replace cylinders from what I see in your pictures.
