Need some Tillotson help

Post by ihengineer76 »

Hi guys, I need a little advice. I'm working on a 1970 AC Panther with a 295 Kohler one-lunger and am not doing very well with the Tillotson carb. I pulled the carb, cleaned it spotless, checked all the diaphrams and orifices, and set Low to 1-1/2 turns and high to 1-1/8 turns. It will fire up, but not stay running very well. i can keep it running if I pulse the throttle, and give it some choke. It will sputter a little fuel out the carb when I blip the throttle at times. I adjusted the low speed out and in a little, but it didn't make a difference. The exhaust is clear, compression is good, and the crank seals seem to be ok. If anyone has any advice, i would appreciate it!

Tom if you adjust the low speed needle and it makes no difference than it there must be an air leak somewhere.

Head gasket? Base gasket? Carb insulator plate cracked? Crank seal?

I worked on it some more last night. I didn't find any air leaks, and did get it to respond a little to adjusting the jets. It will now idle with the choke partially closed, and run at higher RPM. I am thinking that I may need a diaphragm kit, as the original may be a little stiff, or not pumping/checking fuel correctly. She is up for sale, and I would like to sell it as a running machine.

Got it running correctly today. I bought a carb kit for it with all new diaphragms and jets, and now it runs fine. I just need to polish it up a bit, and it will be all ready.
