Fire series Liquifire clutch cooling
I had thought the original owner of my Liquifire drilled the holes in the left front for clutch cooling, as I was told he just towed his ice shack with it. Found out it is a factory thing. Why all the holes? I tried to ride a little powder and snow just dumps on the belt.
Do you guys close it off for powder riding? A certain temp you close it off? Why just on the Liquifire and not the fan cooled? I plan on a couple of vintage rides a year and a little around the yard riding.

Are you referencing the holes punched in the TPR forward of the primary? Those are factory and I don't know of anyone closing them off for powder riding. When I've punched a drift or been in deep snow, it tends to come into the engine bay from everywhere including the triangular shaped hole on the left side of the headlight recess area where it melts rather quickly. Occasionally a rivet or two can fall out where the TPR fastens to the belly pan and snow is scooped into the engine bay behind the secondary where it can build up and cause belt slippage.

Why the additional cooling? These holes are not on the fan cooled sleds.

It's for clutch cooling purposes, as is the hole in the headlight recess left of the headlight. A grille was supposed to be in the works for that opening but it never happened.

It's all about the horsepower of the LF versus the fan cooled models and they all used the 102C. Different springs, different cam arms (weights) but the same basic framework that had increased performance demands placed on it by the Liquifire, so they were attempting to keep it as cool as possible. Deere knew they were pushing the durability limits with the 102 so they worked with Comet Industries to develop the TR-800, which led to Comet introducing the 108C and EXP clutches. I have replaced numerous 102's on 80/81 Liquifires with 108C and more recently the 108 EXP and the sleds rip as a result. It's literally plug and play with the correct springs and weights and the only downside is it's harder to get the belt past the larger diameter clutch.

Depends on which secondary you have. Use the 1-1/4 belt with the factory secondary on 80/81 machines and the 1-3/8 belt with the standard secondary on 82-84 rides.

The newer secondary has longer towers to accommodate a 1-3/8 belt. Belts cannot be interchanged between driven clutches.

On my 82, I've taped over the belly holes and placed a small screen over the headlight area opening. It eliminated all issues of powder making the belt slip.
