1983 Trailfire CDI conversion??? Please HELP!

Post by Steve's/440Trailfire »

Ok, so I just found out that my lovely 83 trailfire lx barn find has a 1 year only cdi unit that you pretty much can't get a replacement for. I've found one used one so far for $85! Sorry, not taking my chances on used one at that price. The only other option I've heard is to have it rebuilt for $200-$250!! Holy cow! How do I get so lucky!!
Anyway, my question is this, has anyone tried to put the fan housing from another year trailfire that has the seperate cdi and coil on it on to an 83? I have all the equipment off of a 1980 trailfire that I know is good that I could switch over. It looks like the only difference is the length of the red and white leads that come from the stator assembly. I'm wondering if I would need to switch the flywheels and stator assemblys too or if the 83 flywheel and stator will work with the 80 coil and cdi?
Has anyone had any experience with doing this?
Thanks, Steve

I know the Liquifires are different as I'm currently swapping over myself. I can only assume that the trailfires are the same way.

Wow, looking at the Trailfire ignition part numbers on JDparts will make your head spin. Then you look at the Sportfire, and it was the same through the whole run. I'm going to say you probably have to swap the whole ignition off the other engine.

Yeah, I know. I was trying to make sense of the parts cat. too! Crazy how they had so many choices. The fan housing fits on no problem. I just switched it out tonight. I'm going to try it without switching the flywheel, stator, and coils first and see if it works. I'm guessing it won't and I'll end up pulling the flywheel again but we'll see. I will let you know what happens.
Thanks

Do I have to change pick ups and everything or just buy the cdi and coil and plug it all up

Anybody have a sparking CDI for an 81 JD Spitfire 340 f/a kaw? (the combo not separated deal) I need one. Thanks,

Clint
I've had my spitfire since I was 18, also had a cyclone 440 and a liquefire 440. Always wanted a trail fire....
