I don't know how fast your cyclone will go but I can get my 72 400 to 60-65 on about an inch of snow on a dirt road. Through a field with a foot or so you can cut that number in half. That usually seems to be the case for me. My X6 with 400cc will do 70 on the road and 45 throught the field and my X8 will do 80 and 55. I think that the secondary clutch also can affect top speed. The higher the number the faster it goes I believe but there is less acceleration. Hope that helped.

This may dissapoint you. I owned two 76MY 440 Cyclones new in 1976. In perfect tune they pretty much topped out under ideal conditions at just a little over 50mph, maybe 53 or so, via their speedometers. My 75 800 (much lighter) would out run them with no trouble. They were tank heavy and slow.

JDGUY,
I dissagree with you on your results of your cyclones. I rode my cyclone when it was new, on a hard packed roadway and had it up to about 65-70 by the speedo. Keep in mind the speedometers are not acurate by no means at all. I found a formula that calculated the top speed to be around 70(440 cyclone) with the stock gearing and the clutches working perfectly. To reach top speed the snow has to be hard packed.
440 liquifire max mph=77Using the formula below, the 340 cyclone should be able to max out at 63 MPH

Formula to calculate MPH

MPH* = (RPM/GR) x (DC/12) x (60/5280)
340 cyclone governed rpm=6500-7000 rpm
440 cyclone governed rpm=6500-7000 rpm
440 liquifire governed rpm=7250-7750
GR = gear ratio (bottom sprocket divided by top sprocket)--1.86:1(340 cyclone)
1.67:1(440 cyclone)
1.67:1 (440 liquifire)
DC = Driver circumference

Driver circumferences
7 tooth (2.52 Pitch) - DC = 17.64
8 tooth (2.52 Pitch) - DC = 20.16------cyclone/liquifire
9 tooth (2.52 Pitch) - DC = 22.68
10 tooth (2.52 Pitch) - DC = 25.24
7 tooth convolute (3.29 Pitch) - DC = 23.03
*This formula is for 1:1 clutch ratio which would result in jackshaft RPM being equal to engine RPM

All I can say is that you must have been running on a very steep downgrade. LOL. In physics they tought us that potential energy is a function of weight and height. The Cyclones certainly had the weight!!! I soon traded for a 76 440 Liquifire, a bit more weight but a lot more HP. Good sled.

The 340 cyclone should be able to max out at 63 MPH
The 440 cyclone top speed is around 70 mph
The 440 liquifire top speed is around 77 mph
One thing to consider is the weight of the rider. When my cyclone was new I was only 14 and weighed around 140 lbs., if that.

i have to disagree with all of you. my old man bought his 78 cyclone 440 new and on the canals up here he had it topped out at 92 although the speedos arent correct.

Speedy or not it will still be fun and 50mph on a 1976 sled feels like 80 on a newer sled. just my thoughts
