Tapering Rear of a Tunnel... Who's done it?

Post by 427cobra »

Well after selling all my sleds and trailer a couple years ago... I think its time to get back into it.

Talking to my buddy who I used to go sleddin' with we decided to get back into snowmobiling the same way get got started..JOHN DEERE'S! haha

My initial thought is a fan cooled 80's Fire Series sled. I've always wanted to try and taper the rear of the tunnel to get that "deep snow" look. Anyone have a good example of this "nip and tuck" procedure?

Don't worry Ill find some common sled to cut up. All the 83' & 84' Chassis would be off limits.

Something like what is shown in the attached picture... (couldn't find a Deere)

I was thinking that Allen Campbell bought a sled from out west that had been tapered. Anyone remember ???? I'll check in with him via Messenger.

Personal opinion, totally ruins the value of the sled. Don’t do it.
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.

I understand that. Not too worried about the resale value of a $300 sled. I wouldn't do it something that's worth a lot.... Just kicking the idea around.

Id like to see some pictures of how it was done. I'd appreciate it. Not looking for a Liquifire though.

I appreciate the 84 #222 of #420 liquifire for its history. It was a neat idea for an out west sled that was done well. Does it devalue it, maybe so too most. But then again I'm putting a 4/6 in it being that it was already customized. Do resto mod cars go for less, sometimes yes sometimes no. All in the eye of the beholder ;) I'm fine with having a badass looking more powerful Liquifire. A piece of fabrication artwork ;). That is all!

A sled owner has every right to build a sled the way that they want it.

Agreed!

I'm now one step closer. Just acquired a 80' Sportfire, will check it over and see if its going to be a good candidate. The black spray paint maybe hiding something...ha

Here are a few pics of my '79 Trailfire 440. This is a steel tunnel. I also tapered my '84 Liquifire. Maybe that's the one from Iowa. I heard one time it was sold to someone in Iowa. Both sleds worked great! Rode them many times around West Yellowstone. Original suspension geometry was not altered.

I say do it, but I live out west where we know why this has been done..... it snows! But I'm in the minority of the vintage sled market so if you're worried about resale back east don't do it. Personally, Allan's nicely done tapered tunnel from out west really caught my interest but once again I am in the minority.... Do what you want, it's your sled.
