Barn find trailfire 440 problems #2

Post by Cole4430 »

I would like tips for getting an 80 trailfire unstuck. I have the crank split and the heads off the mag side piston is free but the clutch side is seized. I would soak it with oil but it’s stuck at the ports so all the oils you put runs out. Tried tapping with wood block and hammer but not very long or with much force. Other that that piston engine looks new. Will take any help or advice. Thanks

I had the same issue when I first bought my 81 trailfire 440. Clutch side piston was stuck in the cylinder. To get it free I used a big brass hammer and brass punch and ended up beating the piston out. I used Aerokroil to help loosen the corrosion causing it to stick. Be careful not to score the cylinder walls. You will have to use quite a bit of force if it is stuck bad. You will have to either be very patient with your penetrating oil or use the force method when you can't take it anymore. I am not sure if anyone else would agree with what I did, but hey, my sled now has a rebuilt engine and runs fairly well (albeit some carburetor tuning problems lately).

Hope this helped, even if you got it out already!
