Magneto Eating Crank Seal?

Post by TIMBERRRRR »

Pulled flywheel off 1976 440 Liquifire to find metal shavings and mag side seal completely chewed down to metal. Now I need to find out why so it doesn’t eat the new seal. There was nothing separating the seal and magneto so is the motor missing a spacer or clip here? From what I can see on schematics there’s nothing that goes in place here. Second theory was that the magneto isn’t pressed on the flywheel fully because I can see a gap behind it with a lip on the flywheel and the magneto is flush to the edge of the flywheel but then every picture I can find of these shows the magneto in the exact same place. Anybody have any input?ImageImageImage

Possible the seal wasn't installed correctly the last time someone did it?
