Took carbs and fuel pump apart all clear put back in same thing just bogs took all out again and all clear put back on this time without the air box and runs perfect put airbox back on bogs take out runs great so what am I missing I did nothing but park it last year and haven't had an issue in 10 years ago took the pipe off a parts sled that I had and does the same any suggestions just lost here
Thanks for any help

No definite answer here, but from your description is sounds like the air box is restricted, maybe mice built a nest in it or mice urine corroded the screen mostly shut in the box, or something else in the box? Another wild guess would be the speed control or other circuit. The wiring for it and other stuff fits fairly tight to the top of the box when it is installed, has it made a loose connection with box installed?

Thanks for the post I even took out the screen and there is nothing in the air box wide open also i can just slide the air box in and out without touching the wires or cables and does the same bogs when in and runs great without even if you just move the airbox back of the carbs it seems to run better

Factory air box?
Re: 1980 liquifire 440
Yes factory air box
Re: 1980 liquifire 440
I assume you know that the left and right carbs are jetted differently due to air box air flow. The right side as you set on the sled is more restrictive if I remember right.

Yes that all checks out correct it is just mind boggling I parked it last year running and this year I have this going on right from when I took it out of storage so what on Earth could have happened through the summer is just confusing as heck iparked it the same spot/way I have the last 10 years

One of the clutches must be seized or spring out of place, or broken?

Rev limiter had been unhooked for about 20 years and springs and clutches are all good also. Is there a possibility that there is something in the pipe that is restricting the exhaust and when the air box is off it is getting more air/pressure to blow past whatever could be in there?? With the air box off I drive it and and pulls 7800rpm and runs like it should

I have absolutely no experience in running one without the air box mounted and the stock power jet carbs don't operate correctly without it in place. Stock muffler with the "L" welded on the top side opposite the outlet?
Re: 1980 liquifire 440
Yes stock muffler is it possible that something could be lodged in the muffler or baffle?

Mouse nest in the muffler? It happens...
Re: 1980 liquifire 440
I put a pipe camera down the pipe and can see the baffle and nothing else inside the pipe. So does the exhaust actually go through baffle or around it can't seem to get the camera tube past the baffle and hard to get inside the baffle

Sounds like your muffler is clear.
Do you have the u - shaped dead air hose attached to the screen? Real early production supposedly had an intake hose that sourced air inside the plastic dash although I've never actually seen one of those in the flesh.
