Wanted: Walbro Carb to Air Intake Adapter

Post by Cdnturboz »

Looking for the aluminum spacer/adapter that goes from a Walbro wda carb to the air box on JDX/00s mid mount sleds. (I converted to Walbro from a bendix and need the air box spacer.

Circled in the photo below:

What engine do you have?

According to the parts book, there were two of these used. The one you pictured appears to be the M64167 used on the Kohler powered 300 and 73 JDX4.

The other one, M64622, was used only in 74 as far as I can tell, and only on the piston port engines. JDX4 Special, 400, 500, 600.

I am not sure why these were used at all. The JDX4 used it in 73, then 300 used it from 74 thru 77. All the rest only in 74. My only experience with them is on a 74 340/5, and as near as I can tell, the only reason it is on there is to allow the airbox to clear the aluminum heat deflector. The 1974 Service Text Book that shows all the new features of the 74 models shows that the airbox was slightly redesigned to allow for easier access to the lower mounting screw, and that a 1/2" aluminum spacer is used on the piston port engine sleds, and a 1" spacer on the 300. But gives no mention of it's function.

These are one of those little items that often got lost in the shuffle no doubt. The one I have on my green machine I bought off ebay 15 or so years ago. I would think the one used on the Kohler would be easier to find as they used them a lot longer.

Thanks Brian - after I posted I did some research too in the parts books - looks like that spacer is only for either the kolher engines (one I pictured) and then there is a round version for bendix. Seems the Walbro midmounts either have the air horn silencer or just the air box mounted directly to the carb.

My issue or what I believe the issue is that the air box can’t mount flush to the carb as the left side of the choke shaft is too long and extends/interferes with the air box. Looking at some photos I may have an earlier WDA-32 that was probably used on the silencer/air horn setup. (On those I believe the choke shaft went on the left side) I’m going to see if I can shorten the shaft on the left side so the air box will clear.

Looking at the manuals the Walbro photos show the choke shaft almost being flush with the carb (on the left side ).

I am running a WDA-32 on a 340/5 with that 1/2"spacer. Yes, the choke shaft on my carb only sticks out on the side the choke is operated from. You are correct, the 74 piston ported engines were running the bendix. The WDA-32 was used in 73. I have found it works well on the 340/5. Probably I don't need to use it on my Walbro, But it is on there.

The WR-7 carb used on the 72 400 has the choke shaft that sticks out on both sides, so I understand what you are referring to. I would imagine you could cut the unused side off. If you still want a spacer, let me know.

Thanks Brian - I’ll take a look at it tonight and let you know, hopefully it can just be cut down.

Cutting it down worked great - trimmed it with about 1/2” left sticking out of carb and the air box fits - I had to reuse the bendix aluminum spacer but everything went together nicely. The other spacer “may” work a tad better but overall I’m happy with the results.

Thanks again
