Is a mikuni carb off a 1978 340 Liquifire useable on a 1977 440 Cyclone ?

Probably, The on-line service manual can be found here ; http://www.vintagesnow.com/John_Deere.html

I believe the basic carb series is the same, just look up the differences in the bits and pieces.

Yes, you will need to change to the correct jets.
