Appears my starter has died and I will need to replace. Things feel a little tight getting at the starter. Does the engine really need to come out to replace the starter?

From what I remember looking at my 400 with the CCW I thought there appeared to be enough room to get at it without removing, but not sure on the Kohler if it's a lot tighter?

I know on the CCW's there is a heat shield that comes off first that would give you more room.
