Looking for pistons for a 1972 400

Post by kurtisrohrbach »

Hello,
I am looking for pistons for a KEC-340 out of a 72 400. My first question:
1. Is there really a deference between the L.H and R.H piston?
It seems that the John Deere parts catalog only lists one part number for them both?

2. Where can I find the L.H piston? I have found a supplier that stocks R.Hs but not the L.H, and of coarse its the L.H that I actually need.

If anyone here has some for sale, or is aware of some to purchase please let me know as I hope to get this sled back on its feet soon. :sled:
Thanks!

Yes, the piston port engines had no right or left pistons, the reed inducted engines did though.

There might be aftermarket pistons floating around, but they have been out of production for years. Watch ebay.

Of the piston port engines, original Deere standard size 440 pistons seem to be very hard to find, the 340 pistons are much more available. But, at this point the NOS parts are all in private hands, so you will have to watch ebay, or reach out to individuals who are sitting on some.

If you go to "John Deere Snowmobile Fanatics" on face book, and post what you are looking for, you will probably find some.

There was a fellow on there that I got my pistons from (used good ones) - his name was John Schavemaker I believe (the spelling may be a bit off) he had tons of JD sled parts.
