JD800 Clutch Options

While looking for a parts sled I may have picked up a 1975 JD800 - catch is it needs a new clutch (damaged in the spider area). What are my options/what should I look for?

It's quite peppy for what it is and sounds great with the factory pipe/exhaust.

That is probably your best bet to rebuild with available parts like Luke mentioned.

Just curious does it have the original? It should be a Comet 101C. I have an 800 and have a 102C on it, which has the same weights and spring as the original.

Bringing this thread back up - have been nursing it with the damaged clutch this winter (just been pulling kids around in the yard for the most part) but it's starting to make a racket. Looked closely at the clutch it's quite worn and I saw some cracking on the face as well. (apparently previous owner bought this clutch used on ebay and threw it on)

My next thought is to completely replace it, basically two options:

1) Find a used 102C clutch - question being from what year sled will fit? Looking at newbreed there are different listings for new comet clutches (CCW/Kioritz vs. Fireseries)

2) Buy a new comet clutch, I of course looked on newbreed and they have them as a comet 212600A. Would love to order from newbreed (I always usually do) but the shipping and duty and fees lately has been killing me (not their fault). I found this on on Amazon, appears to be a genuine one with probably $100 in savings for me:

If I find a new Comet Clutch with the "212600A" part # will that in theory fit? or are there different variants of the 212600A that I still have to watch out for?


This sled is probably one of the family favorites to use so Im not concerned with buying a brand new clutch vs rebuilding as we hope to slowly restore and keep using this one for years to come. But am open to any thoughts or ideas.

Thanks I took a look through the FAQ's it didn't really say if there is a difference between the CCW clutches vs. a Kawasaki clutch?

Yes, there is a difference of the clutches used on the CCW/Kioritz engines and the Kawaski engines. The bore is the same, but the offset is different.

Comet 102C Primary Clutch 208306A (Kawi Powered Deere Applications) and has a 30MM shallow taper bore.

Comet 102C Primary Clutch 212600A (CCW and KEC Powered Deere Applications)

All the parts such as the spider, rollers, weights, springs and such are interchangeable. The weights and springs were tuned to application

The Comet 102C 212600A was an upgrade to the older 101C. This series clutch was used on all the early snowmobiles such as the 00 series, X4, X6 X8, Cyclones, and early Liquifires.

Great thanks - that clears a few things up. I started to look in the parts manuals and see that for the 800 its listing a black primary spring, doing some searching on here it looks like the 800 should have a white spring stock?

All the information that I have read indicates that the 800 used a black spring. You may want to reach out to the JD Sled Shed FaceBook group.
