Broken Speedometers

Post by 400brian »

Every so often someone has a speedo that the threaded fitting breaks off the back. The mid-mounts don't seem susceptible to this, but the Cyclones and LFs do. I am less sure about the 79+ models.

Finishing up the assembly of the 78 LF last night, I was cleaning up the aluminum panel that encloses the area of the hood under the headlight. The panel has a round dent right on the right hand corner. I initially thought this was damage, but when I held it up to the back side of the dash I noted the dent matched up with the speedo cable. This got me to thinking...

My wife's 76 Cyclone is sitting in the garage, so I lifted the hood and looked at the speedo cable and the panel above it. The cable has a groove worn in it and the panel has one that matches it.

My guess is that this is what is breaking the speedometers, and apparently by 78 Deere had figured it out as well.
