Clutch engage early

Post by swedetrail »

My 81 440 trailfire is engaging the clutch a tad under 2000 rpm and that?s a little low i think, aint happening much until you hit 3000 so I think it should engage a little higher. Other than that it runs faster than the driver dares go (when you passed 40 you suddenly realise you?r mortal ;))
Anyway a controlled belt tension and clutch alignment and it?s seems to be okay, am I right in assuming that if the spring is lose it would give this problem?

On the drive clutch, check what arms you have and what colored spring you have. Should have "B" arms and a purple spring.

Yes i checked that when i cleaned it this summer. That?s why I?m thinking it could have lost it?s tension, springs tend to do that over time.
Is there anyone who now the correct rpm i have found everything from 2500 to 6000 in this forum but I don?t think deere allowed such a big gap.

Now I am confused this is posted her and I found the same over at Ryans site

TRAILFIRE LX440 436 Clutch:208306A Arm:B 207801A1 Sprin:PUR 207888A.

Mine isn?t a LX but this is on my sled and I don?t think the clutch has ever come of the sled before I did it.

okay since no one covered this.. is it the right belt? does the clutch have anough gap between belt and clutch face to fit a 1/8 bar stock +0.040 clearance.

does clutch bottom out against clutch bolt cold and low idle..

you said its original to sled has any clutch work been done on the clutch? if you remove cover and collapes clutch between spider and shaft you should see at least one 1/16 spacer the other is hidden in spider usually.. if not wrong spacers.

its probably just the clutch spring but there is a free height measurement for them to check to see if good.. I dont have comet book for free height measurement its at shop of course. if you have the tool there is also a foot lbs / inch pount / metric measure for spring tension you can check as well.

also just a note if dealers had the dyno equipment we would sometimes (usually boss's sled ) dyno engine and clutches and changes to clutch wieghts springs were made.

Rich, the weights and spring numbers are from Comet.

Why would Comet and Deere not recommend the same set-up?

Consider the amount off gunk in the clutch i don?t think anyone touched it, it takes years of neglect to get it so dirty ;). Well it?s not that they are expensive or hard to find i am going to get a new spring, then I check belt gap have to translate inch to mm thou but thanks for the information i will let you now the result.
