First off, I really know very little about snowmobiles. 20 years ago I bought a 340/S locally to ride just for fun. I've ridden it very little. However, I never thought it ran right. It will only go about 35mph, just seems to hit a wall. It starts and accelerates fine. I just pulled it out of the shed for the first time in 15 years (we normally don't get enough snow here in north-central IL to ride) and cleaned the carbs and put in new plugs. Same dif. Any Ideas? Also, what is the value on one of these, as I might sell it to someone who would appreciate it more than I do.

Seems I threw a rock through a hornets nest! I really just wanted to know whether anyone knew how to make this old 340/s run better, but the number of requests for info with a view to purchase both here and on email make me thinking I would do better to just sell...especially since I haven't got much info on fixing it. (The brake is fine, and I'm not messing with the clutch but thanks for the suggestion!)

:) I will be sending a PDF page of pics to anyone who is interested---let me know! Since I have no way of valuing this thing myself, I am going to ask for non-binding bids. If you come and look it over and it isn't what you thought, no problem--I want to be fair. I live near Wenona, IL, about a 90 miles South of Rockford. Contact me for more info.

Easy there guys. You're like a pack of wolves! Jeff, when you get to 35mph, is the motor running at high RPMs or is it bogging? It sounds like the clutching needs to be lubed up.

Friends:

Isn't it strange how in the middle of summer when the kids all are crying for you to set up the pool--you start thinking about snowmobiles? Anyway, just wanted to let you all know I sold the 340/s - to Rich. I'd love to hear about any restore, and what he found when (if) he dug into the machine??? At the time, he told me the clutch was probably not shifting, although to answer a question above, the motor seemed to bog, as I recall. It's probably just as well, as I probably would have killed myself if it had been running right!!
