I've been keeping my eyes open for a cheap motor for my boat, and found a 1961 Johnson Sea-Horse 10 for $50. It needs a little TLC, the biggest problem being a piece chipped out of the flywheel. I don't think it would normally be a problem, but the recoil starter paw catches in the lip then pops out when turning it over. Of course I didn't see this when I bought it.

if your lucky you could find another flywheel for a johnson otherwise a machine shop could repair it. It took us a month to find a flywheel for a johnson in the mid 80s for ours so it could be tricky now or not depending.

Speaking of older outboards, I was trying to help my neighbor fix up a Crysler 9.9 hp outboard. We busted a piece that is on the pull start. We got that part now we can't get the coil spring to pull the cord in. Can anyone give me a quick explaination on how it works. The cord comes into a pulley that has a shaft with a spring on it, but It is either sprung or we are just looking at it wrong, any ideas.
thanks

I found a couple sources for used flywheels, but I'm keeping my eyes open for a better price.
I got it running, and have almost everything cleaned & lubed. Just waiting on some new prop shear pins. It should be able to hit the water by next week.
tipitup, it sounds like the coil is not wound/attached properly. Did you have it out? Are you aware that you have to load the coil up when putting it back together?

matt,
I guess the main question is like you said that I need to load the coil up when I put it back in. I'm not sure how to do that. I did have it out, because of the other piece that busted. I tried to wind it up in the motor and am not sure if that is correct. There is a screw in the top and then it is just a tube with a coil around it with a plastic piece on the bottom that connects with a pin to hold it in place.

Matt, have you checked out the classifieds at the Antique Outbord Motor Club's website?

Had to plug the other club I belong to since it's on topic.

This motor still hasn't seen use. It has had one problem after another. I did put it in the water once, but it decided it did not want to shift into forward, and it was leaking gear oil from the upper seal in the lower unit. Then I broke a plate/bushing while putting the lower back together, and now I'm waiting for that to get here.

If its not worth that much to you then it might be time to cut your losses Once you spend more then you paid for it then it might be time to get rid of it. Unless its a Deere

Bob,
What? That doesen't make any sense. I shouldn't put more into it then it is worth, but if it is worth $200 running, and I bought it for $50, then I can put in another $150 and still be able to sell it and get my money back. Now I'll be about $250 into it total, but hey, this is a hobby not a business.
