stuck clutch
80 sporfire. I am trying to pull the clutch and no dice. I have a puller and have screwed it into the hole but the clutch will not come off. I do not have the socket for my impact wrench, so I just tightened the puller as tight as I could and gave it a couple of smacks on the back side of it. Now, what else can I do. Is heat an option? Give me some more ideas.
thanks

gave it a couple of smacks on the back side of it??? I hope you smacked the puller not the clutch. DON'T HIT THE CLUTCH WITH A HAMMER.
1st are you sure that your puller is the correct one, so it is long enough??
You almost need an impact to pull the clutchs, the hammering of the impact help pop them loose.
you might try to have someone hold the clutch (BY HAND, DON'T USE A PRY BAR) ) while you try tightening your puller more with a ratchet if you don't have an impact, then smack the puller with a hammer (making sure you hit it directly so you don't bend the puller or worse your crankshaft
do not use heat as you could get it too hot & ruin the clutch & or your PTO side crank seal, you can also take out the puller, turn the sled on it's side (clutch up) & put a bunch of 90 gear lube in the hole in the clutch then reinstall your puller & tighten it up, this might HYDRAULIC the clutch off the crank, it's messy but sometimes it works.

I did smack the puller. The puller is the correct one, it is long enough. I am looking for a socket for my impact wrench, that is my next step. I am taking the clutch out so that I can replace the seals, so would a little heat on that end hurt? Not a lot just some to get it going. Let me know your thoughts on that.

It's till not a good idea to use heat on the clutch as it could damage it. unless mybe if you were useing a heat gun & not a torch, but anytime i ever had one stuck that bad that I had to use heat I ended up buying a new clutch, (ask Wadeo 108 about that, he is right now looking to buy a new clutch, LOL)
once you get the socket for your impact along with useing it try the 90 gear lube with it & you souldn't have any problem getting it off.

Thanks ken, I have been pounding on this clutch for a while, nothing. I did get my socket, I tighten up the puller as far as the impact wrench will tighten it up and then hit it with a hammer, but still nothing. I'm getting tired!!! I have not tried tipping the sled up and putting 90 gear lube into it. I have been putting wd-40 and some other teflone bolt loosener on it, but to no avail. I'm going to keep putting the puller in and the bringing it out and repeating the process.

tipitup,
If you don't have the gear oil, use a grease gun, remove the clutch puller and fill the hole up about 3/4 full and thread the puller back in and tighten it with your impact gun. The gear oil or the grease with hydraulicly remove the clutch.

I'm NOT recommending this (unless others say it's okay) but the guy at the shop in town told me they fill them up with water instead of gear lube and let them sit out all night. The water freezes, expands, and POW - clutch is off.

tipitup,
How much torque are you applying to the puller. A good air gun/wrench, would deliver about 250 lbs of torque.

When you get that "friggen" clutch off, and before you put it back on or another clutch back on, put some "Never Seeze" on the crank taper, not much, about the size of the business end of a wood match. Wipe that amount around the taper on the crank. You will never have your current problem again. You can buy Never Seeze at most bearing supply commerical outlets. Run the sled 5 miles or so, retorque the clutch mounting bolt, check alignment and shim the secondary as required to get belt alignment.
I know you have previously been given some good advice on removal methods. If you are careful, again, very careful, you can rapidly heat the clutch at the crank contact area with a propane torch and immediately hit it with a stong impact gun on the puller tool. The objective is to rapidly heat the clutch before significant heat is conducted to the crank. That has worked for me. Careful on the heat or you can destory the crank seal as mentioned in previous posts. Sometimes after you have struggled with it long enough, you may say screw the seal, spot heat the clutch on the steel portion that contacts the crank (keep heat off the spider), get it off, and replace the seal.
Good luck, some of them are bastards to get off, especially those that that have been on for several years. There seems to be enough microscopic corrosion that nearly "welds" them on.
Best of Luck, my 2 cents worth.
