In 1974 I had a new 73 Monte Carlo, 454 CI. - 4bbl. (1973* LS4 - 454 - 275@4,400 395@2,800 Chevelle/MonteCarlo/Corvette * SAE Net) 3-spd turbo 400, 3:07 rears
I got 10 MPG if I took it easy & 9 MPG if I beat it, This car would only do somewhere around 4600-4800 RPM (in Drive) & only got 109 mph tops.
I changed the rear end gears to 3:72 (also changed the speedo gear in the tranny) & still got 10 MPG if I took it easy & 9 MPG if I beat it.
But now was (radared) @ 127 MPH, More power to the rear tires for this heavy beast = more speed.
By the way My average MPG was about 9 for 118000 miles when she finally dropped a valve, you know a little broken valve makes a hell of a mess of a Big Block @ 5200 rpm.
To bad she was out of warranty!

when you drop a valve they tend to tear up cylinders and crack the heads. they also make a very distinctive noise before they drop.

your specs seem kinda low for a 454.

RP, By 1973 the HYPRO motors were pretty much low on HP & I'm sure that this was the cheaper lower HP model of the 454

Don't forget that pre 71 HP was GROSS HP at the flywheel with no accessories and post 71 HP was NET HP measured at the rear wheel with full accessories including A/C. Joel.

Thanks Joel, I probably knew that back then, but that bit of info must have been in one of the brain cells I lost since then... LOL

Aside from net or gross its also a different hp scale too.

Still i remember 70s 454's being more hp and torgue. Even the smogged ones should be closer to 400hp torque would be lower.

Kenny's right on the horsepower and torque for 73. A smogged 454 with 8.5 compression on regular unleaded wouldn't be any where near 400 hp. Before I was parts guy for Deere I had seven years in a GM dealer and used to go through all the old brochures and manuals there. Joel.

Hey Kenny,

My first car was a 73 Buick Electra 225 with a 455 Buick, Turbo 400, 2.73 gears. I think that pig was 'about' 220 to 250 hp. 1973 was a tough year on big blocks. Dirt low compression (8:1 in my Buford), no cam, single 2" exhaust. That car ran past 300,000 miles, and I even had it in collage for year around 1990.

Even though it weighed in at 4,400 lbs, it would bury the 120 mph speedo on the flat, but she was getting tired near the end. Always sounded cool with the the air cleaner lid flipped.

Around town it got a solid 8 mpg, and 12 on the highway driving it 250 miles back and forth to RIT.

I had a 71 Centurion after that. It 'only' had 180,000 on it when I got it, but it would run circles around that old 73. You had to run it on good gas, even though it was the first year GM lowered compression accross the board. That car was fun for a 2 ton, 2 dr tanker. Both it and the Electra were B-bodies like the Impala. Funny, but it got a solid 16 mpg on the highway with it's 455 and Turbo 400 and 2.73 gears. Emissions back then really lowered the efficency of IC engines and hurt milage.

I sure to miss the sound of the 4 bbl quadra-bog at WOT...

Yeah, there's nothing like the sound of a built 350 Chevy with headers, glasspacks, and a quadrajet when you get on it. AWAAAAAAHHHH!!!! I sure miss my 79 Cutlass somedays (except the gas mileage-12 MPG on premium). Joel

hmm guess im just used to dodge to much as even the 440 lowered 8.2 compression and regular cam was good for a solid 360hp verses the 67-71 440 magnum which is about 390+ using same hp standards for 75.

myself since i work on the mopar performance cars alot fixing this and that for shows detailing fixing other peoples f**K ups. I am used to POWER. a 340 is okay even built up.. a 350 chevy or 327 chevy is a joke compared to what i play with.

you want the real feel of raw power go for a ride in a properly done dodge Big block.

Our 75 monaco 4 door hardtop will break the tires loose without even steping into it.. i havent even opened up the 4 barrel yet its scary enough.. note its a 75 440 new rings bearings stock magnum cam 71 intake with an avs carter carb compression ratio is about 9.2 stock manifolds and dual 2 inch exhaust. exhaust ports were cleaned up but not polished or ported open. air cleaner is stock dual snorkel air cleaner. the engine now has at least 5000 miles on it so its just starting to wake up..

That Monaco would make a fine demo derby car here in Indiana.

RP, Take the solid lifter LS-6 or the L-88/89 and put it under under the 1973 HP/TQ numbers, they will be similiar to the slow-par.

As for you saying: "myself since i work on the mopar performance cars alot fixing this and that for shows detailing fixing other peoples f**K ups. I am used to POWER. a 340 is okay even built up.. a 350 chevy or 327 chevy is a joke compared to what i play with.

If I remember the Chevy 302 held its own quite nicely. Build a 327 correctly, drop that or the 302 it in a 67 Camaro and will hold its own, and snap your neck back in all 4 gears just like your Dodge. And eat it up on road corses all day long.

Beware of the red bowtie....
