I have a '73 600, and i had to take the engine apart to fix the points again and decided to replace all the leaky gaskets. I was looking at the gasket set through the packaging and it appears to not have a base gasket. I also ordered a set for a Skidoo i have and it has long square o-rings that im assuming are for its base. I just wanted to confirm that it takes a gasket and not just sealer before i send it back.
Any tips on getting the clutch off easier is appreciated too. I dont want to tear up the shaft or the clutch like ive heard on here. Getting the flywheel off for the first time was hell, im expecting this to be worse.
I got to put 3 miles on it last year, the first time its ran in the seven years ive owned it. Help me break my record.

ohioSled,
Use the proper puller for the flywheel and clutch and they should come off. The 600 engine uses a base gasket between the cylinder and crankcase. Check with the parts vendors and check out ebay

Are you talking about the crankcase it self when you separate the 2 halves or the gasgets that go between the top of the crankcase and the bottom of each cylinder?

This is the most extensive work ive had to do on an engine and i think i was confused about what the base gasket was. I thought there was supposed to be a gasket for the two halves of the crankcase. Looking at the basket of parts for my other engine i see that there is no crankcase gasket for it either.

ohioSled,
There is no gasket between the crankcase halves. When essembling the crankcase halves together, a special sealer such as Yamabond, Kawabond or similiar crankcase sealer is used between the halves. The base gasket goes between the bottom of the cylinders and the crankcase.

Thanks for helping straighten things out for me.
I also need to know how much to torque the bolts and the thread size for a clutch puller.

For all 13 mm nuts, torque should be 15-18 ft-lbs. On your 440, that should be all crankcase, jug-to-case, and head bolts.

If you need cylinder base gaskets, or head gaskets I MIGHT have some NOS ones but I need to know what serial number (73 440-600??) & if it is an original motor (piston ported, not reeds) to look up the part numbers, unless you have the numbers.
