Blown Bulbs...
Hi...
Having started and ran my restored 83 Sprintfire (on a block) a few times
, I depressed the throttle a bit, engine reponses well... sounds great, but then both the headlight blew followed by the tail light. A buddy of mine says its relatively common and is most likey a bad voltage regulator. Would that be the consensu of those on this board?
Thanks,
Dan

Dan,
Your buddy is problably correct. Use a voltage meter and check the output at any of the light bulb sockets or at the voltage regulator. If the voltage is greater than 12-15 volts AC, then the regulator is blown.

Take the regulator off and clean the surfaces and contact areas. If it doest ground to the chassis properly I dont believe it will work. Especially if you just repainted the sled. Corrosion never rests.
Just a thought.

Something I learned in school. Before Electronic Components are mounted to a Ground, Get an application of a Heat Sync Grease. This Grease helps Transfer Heat with the flow of Electricity, and prevents Corrosion. Without this Grease the Electronic Component(s) will Not Last Very Long or may not Function Correctly. Regular Wheel Bearing Grease Does NOT work.
Ever Buy a Alt. Rebuild kit and get alittle tube of grease stuff? When you put the voltage regulators and teh Diode Bridge Back in there, your suppose to put this gease on the Mounting Area's.

You can also use dielectric grease found in any auto parts store it is probably the exact same stuff as heat sink grease its commonly used on ignition connections.

Yea I meant Dielectric grease, which is Heat Sync Grease.

ya my bulbs blew dont run your sled i ran my sled and burned the cdi box out so change it first
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.

Yea, I've learned how and why. I Look back and think Wow. Thats Why the 340 Jd Liquifire I had Never would light the bulbs. and then the CDI Box went... and i Sold it for 150 Bucks....
Blown Bulbs...
OK... so far I am encouraged (votlage regulator new is like $10 bucks) plus i have dielectric grease (was recommended by the company that installed my traler hitch to use on the connections)... but the reference to the CDI is a bit disheartening. Trailfire.. do you mean that I can screw up the CDI if the regulator is not changed... or do you mean that the CDI might be bad and is contributing to the blown bulbs????
I HOPE you mean fix the regulator before you do damage to the CDI... let me know (I don't want to have to search for and buy a CDI!!!!)

"fix the regulator before you do damage to the CDI..."
Exactly. Quit Running it Till ya fix that Voltage regulator. Once you Fix that, and the light bulbs Work/Last.. Your All set.*
*Not Held responsible for Faulty Parts.
