i talked to ken and he told me to ask you about my jdx4 special. I work at a jd dealer and i got this sled with a 1072 miles. It had no spark and i replaced both condensors. Then I had spark on one cyl and the other side didn't. I pinched a tan wire that grounds to the condensor in the rear and it smoked. I then put a new wire on and two new condensors and still only i spark. if I switch the red and white wires to the coils then the spark switches to the other plug. I think it is in the wiring from the plastic plug on the rear of engine to the points but i'm stumped. do you have any ideas. 74 special and it has the ccw engine and i'm pretty sure it is the kokusan ignition. you can call me at 712 845 2643 work or home at nite at 712 845 2147 thanks for any info matt.

Correct me if Im wrong but if you smoke a condensor it will burn the points. If it burnt the points and you didnt clean them that could be why theres still no spark.

jdx4special,
check out this wiring diagram, I think it is the same as your sled.

I would inspect the points for pitted spots and try to clean them with a nail file or fine emory board. Blow out any dirt and readjust.
Follow these guide lines to adjust the points.

If my memory serves me, as Andy stated, the condenser absorbs the voltage when the points open. They also give a slight boost in voltage to the external coils when the points close. If the condenser was burnt, the points would arc over and burn prematurely.

normally the only thing that burns out points is continual voltage (like in a older car when the key is left on, Not possible on a snowmobile even with electric start). Like Harley said, on a sled they can be filed & cleaned up if corroded, make sure to spray clean any fileings or dust off with a spray such as electric motor spray cleaner or starting fluid. If you can change the spark from one cylinder to the other by reversing the wires to the coils then the problem has to be inside the flywheel someplace, make sure you haven't got a broken wire that is broke inside the shielding or a connector that isn't hooked to the wire directly or a connector that is grounded out. You should be able to charge your condensors manually with voltage to see if they will hold a charge & are working properly. An old trick in the old days was to charge a condencer & toss it to someone so when they caught it, it would discarge & they would get a shock, one of the old timers in your shop should know how to do that.

Hey Ken, Harley like I said wasnt sure on that But how about this JDX4 have you checked the dead coils wire either the red or white which ever it is for voltage. You can do it really simple with a test light on these points setups. It should light up the light when you pull it over a dim light usauly means bad contact in the points a nice bright light is usally good you can even see it flash if your pulling fast enough. If your getting nothing I would suspect the internal coil or a broken or grounded wire. Since you mentioned a pinched wire previously if the wire has a crack/bare spot thats touching metal anywhere you wont get spark. Thats actually how the kill works.
