Exhaust leaking a little

Post by Metallica19991 »

OK. i checked the carb and i could only make out these 2 letters which were WD.. the others beyond that i couldn't make out.. its just too worn to tell... anyways heres me question.. if i took the clutch off my 1973 kec 340 engine and put it on my other kec 340/5 engine would it fit? so i guess what im asking is will the 1973 clutch work with trhe kec 340/5?

The WD.. is a Walbro carb.

If you are certain you have a '73 KEC-340 engine, the clutch will enterchange with the KEC-340/5. What kind of clutch do you have? Salsbury or Comet? The reason I'm asking is that even though the clutch may interchange the belt width may be different. The Salsbury units on Deere 340's used a narrower belt than did the Comets. Are you putting this back in a Deere sled? The secondaries are different too. What sled are you going to install this engine into? 400's in '72 and '73 with 340's used the narrower clutch and secondary set up. I think in '74 they switched to the Comet units and they used the wider clutch and secondary.

Can you get the matched secondary from the sled that the motor came from? Don't quote me on this but I'm thinking the Salsbury used a 1 3/16" wide belt, I'm not sure of the exact width but they are narrower than the ones Comet used 1 1/4" wide maybe? And yes that 1/16" is critical for proper engagement. The point I'm getting at is that if the width of the clutch does not match the width of the secondary sheave you are trying to drive it will either smoke the belt or you will not be able to get the speed out of it you are trying to acheive. You may also over rev the engine trying to get the belt to engage the clutch depending on the mismatch. If this is a go cart application you will also need to determine the right length of the belt you need for proper engagement and operation.
