79 T/F IDLE PROBLEMS
79 T/F IDLE PROBLEMS
I HAVE A 79 TRAILFIRE. IT HAS BEEN SITTING OUTSIDE FOR ABOUT 14 YEARS. IT TOOK ME ABOUT 2 WEEKS TO GET A NEW GAS TANK AND CLEAN THE CARB UP. I GOT IT OUT ON 12/3 FOR THE FIRST SNOW. I HAD THE TIME OF MY LIFE ALL DAY. THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE IS THAT IT WILL NOT IDLE FOR ME.
ANY CLUES ON THE IDLE SETTING OR MAYBE THE FUEL TO AIR MIX.
THANKS ANYONE*

79 T/F IDLE PROBLEMS
Hello Mr. Irvin,
I will try to help out here. I am assuming you replaced the pilot jet and cleaned all the passages in your carb, so here are a few other things that could effect your idle:
1) Idle adjustment screw is out of adjustment, located on the side of carb.
2) Air screw is out of adjustment. I think it's supposed to be about 1.5 turns open.
3) Choke not seated correctly, or out of ajustment. Should be free play at the lever while in the off postion.
4) Crank seals could be shot. My old 82LX became hard to start and had no low end power after eating the PTO seal. Hearing that it sat outside for 14 years makes me think the PTO end of the crank could have rusted and is chew up the seal.
5) Drive clutch spring is weak, causing it to ride rub on the belt at idle
6) Clutches are out of alignment, causing the belt to rub the side of the drive clutch
I hope this info is of use to you. Please keep us posted on your progress!

THE IDLE SCREW DOESN'T CHANGE ANYTHING
IS CLOCKWISE IDLE UP OR DOWN?
AIR SCREW- THAT IS ABOUT WHERE I HAVE IT
CHOKE- I THINK IT IS ABOUT PERFECT
CRANK-THAT WAS THE ONE THING I WAS SCARED OF
IF THAT IS THE PROBLEM WOULD I BE OK TO RUN IT LIKE THAT UNTILL SPRING IF I CAN DEAL WITH THE IDLE? <_<

I could also be sucking air from your intake boot located between the intake and your carb. I know that on my trailfire I had a hard time to get that connection sealed up so it would idle correctly.

THANKS,
I WILL CHECK THAT OUT TONIGHT AND GET BACK WITH THE INFO

Good point about air leaks on the intake tract! Could be base gasket, intake manifold gasket or the carb boot as mentioned by JDKC.
If it is a crank seal, boot, or gasket you do run the risk of burning down if its run too lean too long. A check of plug color should help you verify mixture.
With the carb idle screw, clockwise should raise the throttle slide, increasing idle speed. Should that is!
Good luck with it,

Or the idle circuit might still have a spec of dirt in the carb someplace you might have to reclean & blow out all the small orifices in the carb body with air or a spray carb cleaner.
