Clutch Puller

Post by Mailman »

Was wondering if a clutch puller that you can use on a 73 JDX4 will work to take the clutch off a 81 Sportfire?

Clutch Puller

I have my own type of puller that uses the bolt from a snap on puller set that has worked on both of these models your asking about. So the threads are the same size on both the clutch and the crankbolt so aslong as it has the correct length which it should see no reason it wont work.

Clutch Puller

JDFanPa, I was able to get a puller that fits a X4 but when I tried to use it on the Kawi motor it would go right inside the clutch hole. It looks like the size of the bolt for the kawi motor is around 3/4" where as the X4 is around 9/16". I'm looking on getting a different puller. Thanks for the info. Mailman

Clutch Puller

Thats strange Mailman I have used this same puller on every deere clutch Ive removed from my personal jdx4 to my trailfires. I can only offer 2 explanations a trai and sportfire use different clutchs which I didnt think they did other than calibration. Or its possible that theres a comet off another brand sled if your not the original owner. You are certainly right about the 9/16 size as it an oddball size if you were to look for a bolt to use thats how I came up with using the puller bolt out of a snap on set.

Clutch Puller

Well we'll find out in a few days as I ordered one today. Your right about the bolt out of the puller as that's what I used when I took the clutch off of the X4 before I got a reg puller to fit the X4. Also the sportfire takes a Comet 102c clutch and that's what is on the engine. I checked the X4 clutch and it's for a 1/2" fine thread bolt. Time will tell. I'll let you know what happens. Mailman

My mistake on the X4 hole size, the puller is 9/16" the bolt holding the clutch on is 1/2". Duh!

Well I hope you get the right 1. I bought a actual comet brand puller off ebay well anyway I get this thing and start looking at the threads and was like no way this will fit. So after looking at the directions with the puller it stated for comet 102 or 108 [ I forget] on Yamaha only thats where I came up with some comets having different thread. But like I said honestly Ive used my set up on atleast 10 different deere sleds so good luck.

Clutch Puller

Well I got the puller today and checked and it has 3/4" fine threads and better yet it fits. I tried with a impact wrench but wouldnt budge, so I tiped it up on it's side and put some oil in the crank hole like some of you have said to do, still nothing with the impact. I then stuck a hammer handle through the clutch to keep it from turning and got a cheater pipe on the 1/2" drive and started to turn and walla!! she's loose.. Sure a good feeling to know that I don't have to get the blue flame wrench out. One job done, more to go.
