Hello, i have this polaris cobra 440... and it has been sitting outside for atleast 2 years w/o being started.... the engine isnt turning over!!! AND there is snow under the hood... now would it be possible that the engine is frozen (not seized bot actually froze due to cold temps) ? if i thawed the engine out for a few ours do you guys think it would pull over? is it even possible for it not to pull over because it is frozez due to cold temps? Thanks for the help

Met,

Unless there was water in the crank case (bad anyway!) thawing it wouldn't fit anything. More than likely you have a light sieze from sitting, and it's probably just the rings stuck to the cylinder walls.

Remove the plugs, oil both jugs, and after some time try to rotate the motor by the drive clutch.

Good Luck,
-Rainville

Yes it can be frozen not seized. I had my Polaris SS295 colt sitting outside a few years back, and it got snow in and on it and everywhere. I never covered it up. Snow would freeze and melt during the warm then cold days, and the sled got ridden very little. Water got in the recoil, froze around the starter cup, and the engine would not pull over. Thought for sure the engine was seized. Brought it in my heated garage and after it thawed it turned over fine.

The down side was that the water had got inside and messed up the points, so I did have to replace points and condensors, but the engine was Froze, just not froze.

the clutch wont turn? Maybe your Starter is frozen, Ive seen that happend to Snow blowers.. Guy Brings in a Snow Blower. says it ran alittle Rough last snow storm.. and asks me to Rebuild it because it wont crank over. By the Time I get over to it.. I try to Crank it. It Cranks over.. I checked everything.. drained/ Cleaned the Gas tank and carburetor... Threw in a New Spark Plug... Started... Ajusted Idle. 2hr Job. done...

Try to Spin the Clutch. DONT FORCE IT!! if it cranks.. starter has to thaw out.. or be taken apart..

Not Sure... But if its Cold Out Side.. regular Motor Oil wont really work all that Great to Free up those Rings.. Wouldnt Some PB Blaster Work?
I use PB Blaster On Everything rusted/Frozen.... Just a thought..

If you determine it isn't the starter, but rather the rings are frozen/siezed, fill the cylinders with Marvel Mystery Oil, diesel fuel, Coke, Kano's Sili Kroil or even brake fluid (not a big fan of it, but it will work). Let the fluid sit over night maybe a little longer. The fluid will free up the rings.

Coke? What? I can't imagine that sugar can be good for anything in an engine.

Yeah im not pouring coke down it... i poured a little 2 stroke oil down it... let it sit for about 10 mins.... and it freed up!! now my only problem is getting the water/rust out of the engine!!! which isn't going to be good for it i know... i already ordered the needed parts.. this is going to be cool once it is done!!!

Maybe you or Matt don't like pouring Coke, but it works. Used it on small block Chevy engines and siezed farm tractors engines. Sometimes there isn't any other choice but to use "odd" liquids to free pistons up. Just because we have this great new item to free sticky rings rings doesn't mean the old tried and true ways from the "old" days were bad. How do you clean battery posts and terminals? Either Coke or baking soda and water. Want to screw up a car paint job try dumping a little tomato sauce on it and let it sit. Want remove rust from cast iron or remove wall paper from the wall without buying overpriced wallpaper stripper, use white vinager and water. Point I'm trying to make is that it might sound strange, but the old ways work as good as some of these "new" chemicals.

Glad you got your engine freed up. Good luck with it.

If I want something to come loose I soak it in Brake Fluid. High priced but works for me.
