Handlebar pads

Does anyone know of the different black handlebar pads on the older JD sleds? All but one of mine are the short type. The pad extends all the way to the dash on the other one. I saw it while walking through a junkyard an i think it was on a 73 X8. I currently have it on my 74 X8 but would like to know if they were optional or if they were standard on some models. Thanks.

My 600 is a '74 and that has the short pad and the 300 is a '77 and has the pad that extends all the way to the dash, i think that this was one of the changes that took place with the new 1975 model styling.
