what would you do?

Post by jereeich »

I sold a trailfire on Dec 4th to a guy who payed me $50 to hold it until he could pick it up. I wrote in the bill of sale that the sled had to be paid for in full by Jan 4th or the sled would remain mine and I would keep the $50 for my trouble. On Jan 7th i reminded him that the payment was past due and I told him to send a cashiers check or money order ASAP as I needed the money. Its now jan 15th, I havent seen any money and he is coming Thursday to get the sled. I am so frustrated as I could have sold this sled several times. Would it be wrong of me to call him and say forget about picking the sled up? After all he had 1 month to get me the full payemnt, then I even reminded him to send the payment with no luck.

I have no problem storing the sled as long as needed I just required full payment in 1 month.

I've had similar issues in the past and for the most part what can you do...???

You concluded a deal in good faith only to have this clown take advantage of your good nature. If it was earlier in the month and you still needed the cash I would have sold the sled again. I don't think I would have kept the whole deposit but I would have taken $25 for my troubles.

It could be that he's short of cash himself and embarrassed to say anything. Now this maybe true but at some point he needs to come clean and communicate with you.

I'd complete the deal on Thursday, take the money and chaulk it up to life experience. Take the high road here as you'll feel better in the long run. But if he's a no show on Thursday then the gloves are off.. resell the sled and keep the deposit..

Just my thoughts

Cheers

You have al right to phone the guy a say that the dealis off. You gave the guy a fair chance and he didn't live up to the aggreement.

That being said it's up to you on what to do, the deal is no longer valid. I dont recomed this but last winter I went to look at a JDX special I aggreed on a price over the phone drove half an hour to the guys house and he raised the price by a $100. I didn't have that much with me so I tryed to split the diffrence, long story short he still has the sled.

I contacted the guy this morning, he stated he wasnt going to make it and never offered a later pickup date. I told him that I was cancelling the sale...then he files a grievance through paypal for his deposit back. This guy is a member on this site. Just a reminder to be careful who you deal with on here. Not everybody is trustworthy.

And he'll get the $$ back, correct? You can argue with PayPal that this is a non-refundable deposit, let us know how it pans out.

On the plus side, you aren't really out anything but the hassle and time, could be worse.

jereeich,

Sounds like the deal is off, too bad for you, at least E-bay wasn't involved right?

I have a similar story to S-Kyle. I made a deal with a guy over the net for my brother in law to buy a Kitty Cat for my niece and nephew. I was told the sled needed the carb cleaned and a good washing and it would be good to go. He wanted 400.00 for it. His buddy has a 1983 liquifire that I was going to buy for 250.00 Went to look at the sleds near Boston, which is 6 hours away from me.

The Kitty Cat was missing the kill switch and the key switch, the hood was broken, the pan was broken, the recoil rope was cut and rewound into the housing , the chain guard had a hole worn in it from a homemade gear and was loose, the air breather was missing, and the track was almost rotted in two.

The Liquifire was as I had seen it at a show in Boonville two springs ago. Long story short we walked away because the guy wasn't willing to deal on price after it was presented "not as advertised" and he complained about the 35.00 in gas he spent to bring it closer to us.

The real bummer for me was I had been keeping a pulse on that Liquifire also for quite a while. I offered the agreed upon 250.00 for the Liq, and the owner of that sled told me that deal went up by 25.00, because the other dude was going to give him 25.00 to make up the difference in the price so that the Liq owner would get what he wanted out of the deal.

As far as I was concerned, those two "Massholes" lost out on 650.00 worth of sled sales because they took for granted that a 6 hour ride would mean a sure sale for them. It cost us almost 200.00 in fuel.

Kenny's story is true, and it sucks.

But, since I love to bust on Kenny "Watersboy", one of his close friends told him many, MANY times to forget about dealing with the Masshole that owned that 83 Liquifire. We both met him in Boonville, and niether of us could come to terms with him face to face. It's a totally rough 83 that it worth little more than the Comet 108 on it. List of trashed parts include the chassis, track, suspension, all body panels, etc.

He can't say he wasn't warned, LOL!

Sorry to hear about the Trailfire deal gone wrong. Sounds like you were as fair and reasonable as you could be. I try not to get too worried about guy not going through with parts deals. It runs about a 25 to 33% back out rate on a "I'll take it" sale. I just figure guys are like the rest of us with other obligations that are more important.

Sorry to hear anyway, good luck selling it again!

It's sad that a few bad apples can ruin things for everyone. A couple of weeks ago I sold a washer dryer combo on EBAY for $500. The guy who bought it wanted to get it asap. Later that day he emailed me back and said that he didn't realize that is was a gas dryer, (even though it said it right in the title!) and that he couldn't take it now. The funny thing is that he was so concerned about me leaving him good feedback that he payed me $100 for my trouble!!! Easiest money I've ever gotten!
