JD 300 hard starting

Post by ejazz »

Hey guys,
I took the '74 JD 300 out this last weekend on a fisheree and put about 20 miles on. A lot of starting and stopping. As the weekend went on, the old girl was harder and harder to start. After sitting for a while and cooling down, it was real work to get it to fire even after choking. It seemed that the plugs were always dry. I have clear filter and primer bulb between the filter and carb so I can see that the fuel is getting to the carb but like I said, even with choking the plugs remain dry. Once started the thing runs beutifully and as long as you start it with in ten minutes, it will start right up. It has the Walbro carb and I have done nothing with it. Possibly need cleaning? Also, Iam looking for wear rods for the skis, a brake band, and a new drive belt. Thanks, Eric

Have you checked your choke cable & butterfly for proper operation? Do you have a bulb with a check valve, if not do you have a check valve in the tank? If you take off he air breather & choke it do see fuel in the carb? If you do, your getting fuel but may have an ignition issue. I would recommend rebuilding the carb but if you don't want to do it, this web sites admin can provide this service.

Always check for air leaks at between the carb & engine & also the crank.

Check that impluse hose, use a thick rubber type hose & use clamps. Check for air leak where the fuel inlet line enters the carb (use a clamp).

While choking it, I am not getting gas in the carb. What exactly does the impulse line do? I replaced all the fuel lines except for that impulse line. It is still the plastic line and possibly cracked or came loose while riding. Otherwise, the sled runs great. Thanks, Eric

Eric, the pulse line is what makes the fuel pump work.

If it came loose or fell off while riding the engine would stop as it would run out of gas.

Eric - You need to start at the beginning.

* Check compression.
* Check for leaks at all joints (intake, exhaust & crank).
* Check all fuel line & filters & replace if any questions.
* Clean & or rebuild the carb. (Make sure the metering lever is adjusted right & all small ports are clear)

If this all checks out, you then need to look at the ignition system.

Does this machine use points or CDI? If CDI, not much to do but replace. If points, then you need to look at new points, condensers & check all wiring from the stator plate. Of course, you will need to set the points & then time the engine.
