I am looking for some Massey sled info. There is a 76 440 Whirlwind for sale a couple miles from my house and I am thinking about buying it. The problem is, I know nothing about these sleds, what there worth, where to find parts...etc....etc.
Any help would be appreciated!

The 76 and up Massey's were built by Scorpion in Crosby MN.
The chassis is excatly the same as the Scorpion Whip as is the rock solid Cuyuna engine. They use a Walbro Floater carb. Very fast and very light as they have an all aluminum chassis and bulkhead with a plastic pan.
The hood is different than the Scorpion model as it has two headlights which is a continuation of the design theme used by the earlier MF models.
Decals and colors are unique to the Massey sleds.
A mint one will bring over a grand. A good original rider $600. Even an ugly one that runs and moves is worth $400.
Parts are very easy to get as there is a large Scorpion/Massey support group out there. Even our sponser here, Greg with MN Vintage Snowmobile, carries alot of parts for them.
Buy it and you will be happy.

Todd - thank you for the great information! The sled I am looking at is in real good condition...the belly pan, hood, and front bumper are all very straight. It does have 3200 miles on it, but is has been treated very well. I have always thought these sleds where very cool and you definately don't see a lot of them out there still running!

That is yet to be negotiated with the owner. There are two Massey's and a sled trailer in one group price, I am hoping he will seperate them. The other sled is a 300 Massey Chinook and actually is in better shape than the Whirlwind.
I will let you know what I find out.

The Chinook is the same as a Scorpion Lil Whip.
Actually worth more money than the Whirlwind. They are in demand as an inbetween machine for kids. Bigger than a 120 but smaller than a full size.
The engine is a 290 JLO twin and it has boggies. Short 106" track and very lightweight.
But only one headlight.
If you buy them right you can sell the 300 and come out smelling like a rose.
A nice clean unrestored Chinook was sold on ebay last fall for $890.

I stopped back over and looked at the sleds again and they are in very nice shape. It looks like a good overall servicing of the fuel system and drivetrain would be all they need to get them ready to go.
The seat cover on the Whirlwind needs to be replaced, but that is pretty standard stuff on a 30 year old sled. This one on ebay looks like a good one...

The Whirlwind is a damn sexy machine.... park it in the front yard.
So what did you give for them? Trailer too?

Congrats, Kevin. I can't wait to see some pics of them. I had a 340 Whirlwind, but I had a guy offer me a grand for it last winter and I couldn't pass that offer up.........but now I kinda regret it. Here's a pic of it I took on the day I sold it.

Nice looking sled. I am kind of kicking my self for not going to look at a restored Ski Whiz SST last winter.

The guy split up the deal and the trailer is staying with him. I had to work him down on the price because the 440 needs some engine work. This guys father-in-law (who died recently), bought the sleds new and sometime around the late 80's a piston was wounded on the Whirlwind. He claims he has all the replacement parts needed to repair it and they are included with the sled. I guess he also has all the manuals and paperwork from when they were new.
I will take some pics tomorrow when I go to get them. If you know anybody looking for a real nice 77 Chinook, send them my way.
